Thoughtful design

There’ve been many landmark moments in our practice; notably in 2020 HLM became an Employee Ownership Trust and put in place an ambitious development strategy. With significant investment in our team and R&D, we’re proud to have achieved that vision and we’re now driving the next phase of our evolution. HLM has become an innovative practice and we’re always striving to find creative ways to solve our clients’ challenges, deliver real social value, and significantly reduce carbon.

With a shared passion for doing the right thing, our diverse team enthusiastically embraces HLM’s thoughtful design philosophy to shape and renew our vision for the future.

This means taking considered risks, and continuously innovating, learning, collaborating and sharing. We’ve become renowned for our socially conscious expertise in architecture, landscape architecture, masterplanning, interior design and conservation. Our sustainability, regenerative design and social value specialists work within every specialism to make sure we deliver the most meaningful impact on every project.

With studios embedded in communities across the UK and Ireland, we work with outstanding clients to create education environments that inspire, healthcare settings that nurture, homes in thriving neighbourhoods, and public infrastructure that’s sustainable in every sense.

It’s in our nature

HLM has always been – and will always be – a socially conscious practice. For us, social value is about changing lives for the better, empowering communities and creating ripple effects that endure far beyond the lifespan of a project.

What we mean by social value

We’re creating a sustainable, resilient built environment for future generations. Our aim is simple – to embrace regenerative design principles and create meaningful, lasting change. Our contribution to a world where people and nature can thrive together.

How we define regenerative design

Driven by the innovative thinking and creative skill of our people, we invest in R&D, industrialised construction, and digital technologies to help us, our clients and peers make better choices for our communities and our planet.

How our digital, R&D and DfMA teams are driving innovation

We achieve all we do because of the passion, commitment and enthusiasm of our team. We’re proud of the ‘good employer’ accolades we’ve received over the years, and we work together to create a nurturing, inclusive workplace where everyone has a voice and opportunity to flourish.
