Hunterston

Highview is preparing a Section 36 planning application for a Long Duration Energy Storage facility at Hunterston PARC in North Ayrshire.

The proposed Liquid Air Energy Storage facility would be located at Hunterston PARC, formerly the Hunterston Coal Terminal, which is designated as a Strategic Development Area in Scotland’s National Planning Framework 4.

Project Background

Highview develops energy storage infrastructure to support the transition to net zero. Its Liquid Air Energy Storage technology stores renewable energy and releases it when the grid needs it, helping to support a secure, low-carbon electricity system.

Public consultation

Highview has held two public consultation events to share information about the project, answer questions and gather feedback from the local community.
The second public exhibition was held on Thursday 19 March at Fairlie Parish Church and included information on:

  • Environmental appraisal work completed to date and planned for 2026
  • Zones of theoretical visibility and visualisations
  • Feedback from the first event and any updates to the planning proposal
  • Project timeline and key milestones
  • Opportunity to speak with the project team

The public consultation period has now closed. Highview would like to thank everyone who attended the events, reviewed the materials and provided feedback.

Feedback received during consultation is being reviewed by the project team and will be considered as part of the application before it is submitted.

The public exhibition boards and FAQs from the second consultation event remain available to view and download here.

Section 36 application

The Section 36 application will be submitted to the Scottish Government in due course.

Once submitted, the application will be publicly advertised by the Energy Consents Unit. At that stage, the application documentation will be available to view on the Energy Consents Unit website and members of the public will be able to make formal representations through the Energy Consents Unit process.

Comments submitted during the consultation period are not formal representations on the application. Anyone wishing to make a formal representation will be able to do so once the application has been submitted and publicly advertised.
