50 Things To Say Before You Die [18 Jan 2009|02:13pm]
[ mood | contemplative ]

Well, I came across this list, and it's a little different to some of the others I have seen. So I'm going to work out how many I have said. Genuinely said and meant. Here goes.

From Introspection to Rant [12 Nov 2008|05:05pm]
[ mood | angry ]

Something that irritates me? People who view dissent as conflict. Who percieve a negative opinion as an attack. Who believe, for some incomprehensible reason, that to have harmony opinions must be in synchronicity. Who fail to realise that a valid application of argument is debate.

Sensitivity should not be a shield to hide behind. People are allowed to disagree, they are even, oh horror!, allowed to have a disparaging opinion of a viewpoint. Attacking a person is symptomatic of fighting - attacking an idea that a person holds is arguably overzealous, but it does not fall into the same category as the first. People should endeavour to be respectful to and of one another, especially when they hold opposing ideals. There is no requirement to be respectful of a concept. It's time to stop censuring passion in debate just because some people tie up their sense of self-worth in their preciously-held ideas. The ego being injured because someone makes a strong argument against something you've propounded is not justification to gag discussion.

There is little wonder the meek have managed to inherit the earth when they use passive-aggresive tactics to prevent discussion of their views by aligning 'tolerance' with 'prevention of examination'. It unfortunately appeals to our pack instincts and paranoias by portraying differences as divisive, which inverts the concept of tolerance in the first place.

People are not their ideas. Grow a hide. Stand up for what you believe in if you do believe in it.

Stop equating people with ideas, and stop running away from anything that challenges your poorly-thought out sense of self.

Obama For President! [05 Nov 2008|03:02pm]
[ mood | victorious! ]

Just to get my political leanings clear straight off the bat. ^^

Anyway, I woke up from a nightmare that McCain had won. Somehow. Someway. *shudders* Rigging may have been involved.

However, this got me up and awake and (sort of) moving about, and that led me to this post on cleolinda's lj, which led me to this comment:

loversopolite: Ugh it will only get worse as the day drags on...

kinda makes me glad I lost my voters registration card in my move a few weeks ago... Eh I didn't like either candidate anyway...

What? What???

A number of other people agreed with that sentiment, which was fine and dandy, but I did jump on board one little exchange.

venusad: Dude, I busted my ass to get my registration changed over. Hell, if more than a measely 30% of registered voters would've actually stepped up last election we may not have been in this mess in the first place.

Seriously, we should tax non-voters just like Australia does.

teirkin: Australia taxes non-voters? Really?

::ponders this::

highlystrung: Yes we do! *is fiercely, fiercely proud of this*

... actually, it's not a tax, its more of a fine if you don't vote. It's only like $50, but it's there to remind everyone that, hey, actually, you should vote. And here? You have to vote.

Honestly, all the people who propound the theory that 'true freedom' is the freedom not to vote? Are the white, rich, often male, middle to upper-class people who always have had power and who, oh hey, always always vote. Why this incongruity? Because they would be royally assfucked if all the people excercising their 'freedom' not to vote ever became educated enough and did.

Erm.

Sorry to rant. ^^

But all the people who've posted above? Have gotten it slightly wrong. Voting? Not a right. Not a privelige. A responsibility. One we should all live up to.

Why am I reposting this? Because I finally (when half-awake, yay!) summed up a lot of my feelings about the voting process, and why compulsory voting is good, and why I'm proud to live in a nation that enforces it. (And hey? I know you can donkey vote, I know you don't have to register to vote, but the thing is if you do register you have to live up to that responsibility, and that's the way it damn well should be. Living in England gave me chills, y'all. And I don't care what you say, you live in a community, you partake in the advantages of that community, then you damn well take care of that community. You vote. It's not that hard.)

Oh, and why am I reposting the whole exchange? Well, that way it looks like I've actually made a real entry. ^^ Like whoah.

So if you're in the US or any other nation holding elections today, please vote. If you are in a nation where you are give the 'option', please go out and register to vote.

And in final thoughts?

Please, America. Don't fuck this one up.

Quizzes Are Fun! [23 Aug 2008|08:29am]
[ mood | bouncy ]

Your result for The Heart Test...

Soldier of Fortune

You are 30% Independent, 10% Idealistic, 20% Intimate, and 30% Indulgent!

The Soldier of Fortune

Dependent, Realistic, Passionate, Explicit

You are the most ravenous of hearts, the Soldier of Fortune. You desire love, but on your terms and no one elses. You are a passionate person who knows what you want. Love is something to hunt out, and when you find it you will guard it under your watchful eye. You are a mercenary of love, seeking love fervently, and likely to treat it as a trophy once it has been snared.

Matches for the Soldier of Fortune:

The Healer's Heart
The Healer's Heart

Healers are independent, which is something you need, as those more submissive than you will find themselves in a relationship they can't appreciate. Healers also value harmony, so they will work to make the relationship work and press you to value you as a couple, rather than individuals. The healer, like you, is realistic and passionate, both qualities you easily relate to.

The Reclusive Heart

The Reclusive Heart is independent, which is something you need, as those more submissive than you will find themselves in a relationship they can't appreciate. Reclusive Hearts also value harmony, so they will work to make the relationship work and press you to value you as a couple, rather than individuals. You may not understand their intimate loving style, but it is a good offset to your passionate style, and you both can learn to appreciate each other's differences. The Reclusive is a realist, a quality you can easily relate to.

Your exact opposite is The Heart of Gold.

Though they may be tempting, avoid relationships with other Dependents and Explicits. These relationships are tiring and frustrating for you, though you may be initially attracted to them at first.

Your result for The Supervillain Archetype Test...

The Megalomaniac

Ambitious, Intelligent, Calculating

The Megalomaniac is the most prestigious of super-villain classes. If anyone is ever going to rule the world, it will probably be you.

Your main goal in life is power and domination, you have the tools to do it, and you know it. Megalomaniacs are intelligent and forceful, and they tend not to let their emotions cloud their judgment. Most of the time. They are usually found, or not found, working at the top of a huge structured organization, though many prefer to work by themselves.

The Megalomaniac has but one flaw, but its an invariably fatal one; arrogance. He knows that he can take over the world, and he isn't afraid to let you know, often elaborately and in great detail. They often do not foresee the fly in their ointment, because they do not want to admit that such a fly could exist.

Sample Megalomaniacs: Dr. Doom, Lex Luthor, Ras al'Ghul, Kang the Conqueror, Emperor Palpatine, Brain

Huh.

No wonder I'm feeling so melancholy.

Batman: The Dark Knight [17 Jul 2008|03:18pm]
All of those who have ever wanted to see me speechless? All I can say is: - you should have been there at the Dark Knight today. As you were instead clearly absconding your duties, you were not blessed with this rare sight.

So instead you will hear from me an endless litany of 'Go see this movie. Go see this movie right now.' For god sake's. If you know what's good for you.

Best film of 2008. Hands down. No competitors. You can take your artsy bullshit and shove it up your crack. This film was perfect in every way. And no, I do not apologise for raising your hopes and having them disappointed. What you look for in a film is your own business, but this one, I loved. Loved. And I had high expectations. Ridiculously high.

And it not only fulfilled all my expectations. It exceeded every single one of them,

If you know what is decent and good and right for a person to do, then by all that is precious, go see this film. Go. Now.

Oh my god.

Oh my god.

Oh my god.

Absolutely fran-friggin-tastic.

The Glorious Revolution of May 25th [24 May 2008|03:09pm]
[ mood | melancholy ]

Well, tomorrow is the anniversary of The Glorious Revolution of May 25th. I've never done anything for it before, but considering recent developments, it's a fitting enough time for symbolic gestures, I think. I wish I'd gotten something organised earlier, maybe something charity-wise, but honestly, I'm not BNF enough to have done anything successfully (although the nice thing about this fandom is, we don't really have BNF). Either way though, only a handful of people, if that, read this journal, and most of us being students, we tend to believe we don't really have the money to spare.

Tokenism warms the soul though, and so tomorrow, on the anniversary of The Glorious Revolution of May 25th, I am going to write seven drabbles to commemorate Reg Shoe, Cecil Clapman, Horace Nancyball, Billy Wiglet, Dai Dickins, Ned Coates and, of course John Keel. Each drabble is going to be about a favourite Discworld pairing of mine, canon or otherwise, and it is going to be constructed entirely out of my own personal fanon. The only thing I have left to decide is if I'll post them all Sunday or do one for each day of the week after that. We'll see how my schedule pans out. I will, however, write them all on May 25th. At most I'll edit them as I type.

And that, really, will sum up my little token gesture. I hope, somewhere out there, the Gods of the Disc manage to find the idea, if not the execution, at least somewhat amusing.

And if any of you have some cash to burn, or feel like donating, you can do it through the Hazel Hawke Alzheimer's Research & Care Fund, through the UK-based Alzheimer's Research Trust, or you can access a paypal account that'll directly let you Match It For Pratchett. Whether you donate or no, though, I strongly recommend you visit at least one of these sites, because they reckon that the number of people with dementia will double within a generation, and I, at least, would like to know what's going on with that.

Monday Evening: Tired [12 May 2008|10:19pm]
[ mood | mellow ]

Woke up at three. Will go to bed at ... some time past eleven. We're hoping before twelve. Will wake up at five, work until four and then ... sleep, buy stuff? Who knows?

The fact that I'm so obsessed with my sleeping patterns, with when and where I'll get to sleep next, should really tell you everything you need to know about me right now.

Elsewhere, work is an increasingly adrenalin-inducing experience, the housemate is in a quiet phase (that one should expect to last all of, oh, this evening. Maybe part of tomorrow, but I won't be there to see it) and I have just finished reading The Truth again. Found it much more enjoyable this time around, now I know what I'm looking for. Also, the possiblities presented by Charlie are positively .... breathtaking. I'll show you some if I ever get that whole 'buy a scanner' idea up and running.

Creativity in a number of areas is also bubbling away at a quite productive level: Motivation is not.

Saw Hot Fuzz. Enjoyed it, would not see again.

Miss Fishy. Am looking forward to Canberra. Mother's Day was ... challenging. Overall, a neutral to negative experience in most areas, but not to the extent to cause worry or longlasting effects. Merely that the day in and of itself was not pleasurable. But of course, I love my mother.

Week so far? 1/10 - Has not yet made an impression. Have vague cravings for a holiday.

Ok, I actually loved Everything Is Illuminated. Brilliant film. Would reccommend to anyone.

But really? "She says the ring is not here because of us. We are here because of the ring." Someone was having fun with references in that script rewrite, weren't they?

Honestly, I actually wouldn't mind finding out if that was done before or after they knew he was going to be in it. And if anyone could keep a straight face when they were shooting that scene.

God knows I couldn't. ^^

... Oh yeah. Happy Easter everyone. ^^

The darker side of human potential... [12 Jan 2007|10:26pm]
[ mood | pensive ]

I know I've posted this before. But ... I just don't think its something that should be forgotten.

A lot has been said about how to prevent rape.

Women should learn self-defence. Women should lock themselves in their houses after dark. Women shouldn't have long hair and women shouldn't wear short skirts. Women shouldn't leave drinks unattended. Fuck, they shouldn't dare to get drunk at all.

if a woman is drunk, don't rape her.
if a woman is walking alone at night, don't rape her.
if a women is drugged and unconscious, don't rape her.
if a woman is wearing a short skirt, don't rape her.
if a woman is jogging in a park at 5 am, don't rape her.
if a woman looks like your ex-girlfriend you're still hung up on, don't rape her.
if a woman is asleep in her bed, don't rape her.
if a woman is asleep in your bed, don't rape her.
if a woman is doing her laundry, don't rape her.
if a woman is in a coma, don't rape her.
if a woman changes her mind in the middle of or about a particular activity, don't rape her.
if a woman has repeatedly refused a certain activity, don't rape her.
if a woman is not yet a woman, but a child, don't rape her.
if your girlfriend or wife is not in the mood, don't rape her.
if your step-daughter is watching tv, don't rape her.
if you break into a house and find a woman there, don't rape her.
if your friend thinks it's okay to rape someone, tell him it's not, and that he's not your friend.
if your "friend" tells you he raped someone, report him to the police.
if your frat-brother or another guy at the party tells you there's an unconscious woman upstairs and it's your turn, don't rape her, call the police and tell the guy he's a rapist.

tell your sons, god-sons, nephews, grandsons, sons of friends it's not okay to rape someone.

don't tell your women friends how to be safe and avoid rape.
don't imply that she could have avoided it if she'd only done/not done x.
don't imply that it's in any way her fault.
don't let silence imply agreement when someone tells you he "got some" with the drunk girl.
don't perpetuate a culture that tells you that you have no control over or responsibility for your actions. You can, too, help yourself.

If you agree, repost it. It's that important.

And, gods damn it, acknowledge that it happens to men, too.

Fic! [20 Sep 2006|01:50pm]
[ mood | accomplished ]

It's been a long, long time since I've posted fic here. But hey, I became I Buffy fangirl, and you guys tend to be my first port of call to show fic to. I think it's a security blanket thing. Even if no one on LJ actually reads it (and sometimes that's better), it's online, and no-one (generally) has flamed it. From there it can move to deeper waters. ^^

Anyway, I have actually written much on this fandom, 'cause it's exploding my brain, but this is the first I'm willing to post.

Buffy fic. Perhaps a one off? Who knows? Get it while it's hot! (Like cookies, y'know?)Collapse )

Also, Sarah, sweetie, I'm sorry about the phone thing. I don't know if that was you or me, but anyway, much love. Hotmail is being a bitch right now, but I'll try and finish my 'rartheDoctorisdeadformenow!' rant somehow sometime soon. ^^

(5 dreams | Climb through the wardrobe)

9/11 [11 Sep 2006|12:42pm]
[ mood | sombre ]

So, five years on.

Wow. I still remember. I was the first in my family to find out. I turned on the radio, and heard a garbled newsreader. At the time, I didn't know what the Word Trade Centre was. It's strange to think of that now. I went to report to my mother that apparently some people had died in some building somewhere in America. When she heard the numbers I parroted, she dismissed it. We were going on holiday that day. We spent the rest of the afternoon in front of the television.

The American government has reacted terribly since then, and has been followed in its crimes by a disturbing amount of nations and governments. It is not justified in its actions, and it should raise the horror and rejection of all civilised societies. America has foolishly wasted all the capital and sympathy it gained on that day of horror in fruitless wars.

However, this day serves to remind us.

The reaction of America was a reaction. The invasion of Iraq, the perversity of Guantanamo, all of it was after the fact of 9/11. You cannot excuse something with events that occurred after the fact. The actions of Al'Qaeda can never be justified.

Today should not be a day of recriminations. It should be one of sympathy. It should be one of remembering. It should be one of increased understanding and forgiveness.

No one will forget what they were doing on that day.

Today, five years on, we should hope for peace.
