This video walks through how user tags work in Memberium X, why they’re set up the way they are, and how to configure them for your site.
What Are User Tags?
User tags (also called local tags) are tags that live locally on your membership site. They can optionally be connected to a “remote tag,” which is a tag in your CRM (HighLevel is used as the example in this video). This two-layer system has a couple of key advantages:
- CRM portability — If you ever switch CRMs down the road, all of your membership protections and tag-based settings stay intact. You’d simply remap the remote tags to point to your new CRM instead of rebuilding everything from scratch.
- Reduced API usage — Actions like removing tags can be handled locally without making a live API call to your CRM every time, which is a meaningful efficiency gain at scale.
Finding Your Tags
Under Membership > Tags, you’ll find a table listing all of your existing tags, including each tag’s ID, name, mapped remote tag, and whether it’s actively being used somewhere on your site.
Creating a New Tag
To create a new tag, type the tag name into the creation field. You then have two options:
- Without a matching CRM tag — Creates a local tag only. It won’t exist in your CRM until you manually map it later.
- With a matching CRM tag — Check the box before creating, and Memberium X will automatically create the same tag inside HighLevel and map it for you on the fly.
You can also create multiple tags at once by entering them as a comma-separated list.
Mapping a Local Tag to a Remote Tag
If you’ve already created a local tag and want to connect it to a CRM tag, click on the remote tag field for that tag. This will pull in a list of all your existing tags from your CRM. Simply select the one you want to link it to.
Once mapped, the sync works both ways:
- If someone receives the local tag on your site, they’ll receive the corresponding CRM tag as well.
- If someone receives the CRM tag (through an automation, for example), they’ll receive the matching local tag on your membership site.
For clarity, it’s generally a good idea to keep the local and remote tag names the same wherever possible.
Importing All CRM Tags at Once
If you’re migrating to Memberium X and already have a large set of tags in your CRM, there’s a bulk import option that will pull in all of your unmapped CRM tags and create local copies for each one. Tags that are already mapped won’t be duplicated. This is a convenient shortcut if you’re moving an established account over and don’t want to recreate everything manually.
Local-Only Tags
You don’t have to map a local tag to a remote tag at all. Local-only tags have no CRM sync and no API calls attached to them, making them useful for lightweight on-site tracking — for example, tagging a member when they visit a specific page or complete a certain action, when you don’t need that information reflected in your CRM.
