Headunit Revived is an open-source app designed to help you transform any Android device, such as a tablet, smartphone, or screen, into a complete Android Auto receiver. Its main goal is to allow you to enjoy navigation, music, and communication in your vehicle without the need to purchase anything new, perfectly emulating the official infotainment system on secondary screens.

How to set up Headunit Revived for Android Auto

Headunit Revived offers you a number of different ways to link your device. The most direct method is the classic "Plug & Play" via a USB cable, guaranteeing maximum stability for long journeys and preventing unexpected interruptions. However, if you want to avoid cables in the cabin, you can connect wirelessly via NSD (Network Service Discovery), which automatically detects your device via WiFi. You can also leverage its native support for Wi-Fi Direct, a faster and much more modern protocol, as it establishes a direct data tunnel without requiring local mobile data sharing.

Self-Mode: everything on one device

If you don't have an additional device to spare, Headunit Revived allows you to turn your device into an Android Auto screen through what it calls "Self-Mode." This mode makes interacting with your device when you are in the car more intuitive, as the entire interface is adapted for driving. You can also choose whether you want to use it vertically or horizontally.

Video settings and display modes

Headunit Revived is customizable. A whole bunch of parameters can be modified in the settings. For example, you can choose the video codec for the transmission (including native support for H.264 and H.265 (HEVC)). You can also set the resolution in order to see the on-screen content in more detail. You can even tinker with the "Advanced Screen Modes." If your tablet's virtual navigation buttons take up usable screen space, you can enable full immersive mode, hiding all system bars to make use of every physical millimeter of the display, or opt to only hide the status bar at the top. Visually, the internal management is carried out through an interface based on Material 3, which is highly polished, responds wonderfully to touch, and adapts perfectly to your device's dark mode.

Stability, audio and advanced customization

For the driving experience to be completely safe and enjoyable, you need software that won't leave you stranded while en route. In the internal settings, you can activate specific performance enhancements to resolve audio cutouts when listening to music, a common issue in Android Auto due to a classic problem experienced by many emulators when the stereo's modest processor is short on RAM or power. Additionally, you can configure the night mode so that it changes automatically based on the lighting, and freely adjust the interface scaling size (DPI).

Converts devices with Android 4.4 or later

This allows you to calibrate the screen so that key app icons, such as Spotify or Google Maps, do not look too big or too small depending on your device's native resolution. Compared to the original projects it is based on, the entire internal connection engine has been rewritten from scratch, ensuring that GPS positioning and audio flow without any annoying synchronization issues. Its compatibility is superb, allowing older devices equipped with Android version 4.4 KitKat onwards to be used in receiver mode. This gives you the chance to rescue that old forgotten tablet and give it a very useful second life.

My experience with Headunit Revived

Because my car's screen was having issues with the Android Auto app, I decided to try Headunit Revived. To be on the safe side, I connected it via cable to avoid interruptions. Furthermore, it doesn't get as hot when connected by cable, and I can better control the battery consumption. I also conducted tests by putting my device in Self-Mode, and it worked perfectly after fitting it into the smartphone mount in my vehicle.

What I liked most about Headunit Revived and what could be improved

· What I liked most: The enormous versatility in terms of connections, support for high resolutions with H.265 decoding, and the possibility of giving old tablets or smartphones a second life thanks to its enormous backward compatibility.

· What could be improved: The initial wireless setup requires quite a few technical steps (such as starting hidden local servers), which can be frustrating for users with less experience in this area.

Download the Headunit Revived APK and transform any outdated device into an infotainment center with Android Auto and its modern, fluid, and fully customizable interface to make the most of your time on the road.
