For those who haven't heard, Dark Side of the Moon was released 50 years ago today.

I think about music that was 50 years old when I was born, and... well... let's just say it didn't have the same staying power.

Rain Song "unplugged"... [Dec. 4th, 2022|06:44 pm]

Apparently there's a later Page & Plant era recording of Rain Song. Here's a live version.

I guess I also missed out on mentioning that this weekend is VR furry con weekend (http://furality.online). I've been meaning to try one of these, and it's only $15 for the base attendee pass, so gonna give it a try. Looks like they have a pretty good schedule.

Birthday stuff and Garmin being awesome [Feb. 1st, 2022|01:16 pm]
Hastka the Hippogriff
Pardon this somewhat commercial post, but I felt that I had to share that when I had some issues with my "smart pedals" on the bike, as well as having some issues with my fitness watch, Garmin went through a reasonable evaluation checklist to confirm it was in fact broken, and then sent me back "new" replacements for each.

Granted these are in both cases top-of-the-line items that cost a buttload of money and arguably it would be nice if the products didn't break down in the first place, but nevertheless it says something that they literally go beyond expectations (e.g. in one case even after the warranty ended) to make things right for their customers.

They also have provided discounts when I go to get replacement watchbands for the old fitness tracker, too. So again, not to be too "commercial" but I really felt I had to share this data point with others.

The State gave me my favorite birthday present, a bill for ~$600 to register my vehicles for another year. I mentioned something about that to the lady at the "DMV" here (Michigan handles that via Secretary of State), and she got a chuckle out of it. We agreed (tongue-in-cheek) that it was at least a good thing that my money is going to support maintenance of our high quality road system.

Nature's birthday present is a ~40-degree day today, so that's also nice.. though I'm not sure about the expected "8-14 inches" of snow that's expected to fall in the next two days. It's been a loooong time since we got more than about 8" in a single snowfall event. Gotta get my snowblower out and gassed up.

And also hopefully sell the electric one.

Will probably be doing a little bit of celebrating on VRChat tonight, but I haven't really been spreading the word very much, so I'll probably have a more "observed" get-together on Friday or Saturday when we'll be able to stay up late and have some more fun in earnest.

Meanwhile, off to go stock up on food and drinks for the next few days, just in case. ;-P

It's been a while since I voiced my feelings on how much I hate the concept of NFTs and SaaS and for that matter cryptocurrency. Not hate as in "don't understand" or "it's new and disruptive" but hate as in "I've thought it over because I have half a brain, I can see where it's leading, and it's a terrible place." As mentioned in this thread on Twitter it's basically a push to "create scarcity where none exists" in order to monetize something that, at best, shouldn't be monetized, but in many cases has arguably little to no inherent financial value anyway.

Can anyone present a legitimate counter-argument as to why this somehow helps anybody other than greedy people?

While I'm at it, Adobe can also burn in some kind of afterlife of torment for trying to normalize the idea of subscribing to software, such that if I use their whole creative suite professionally for 60 hours a week, or if I open Photoshop twice a year, I somehow still "owe" them $200-500/yr for the privilege.

I feel mostly the same way about anything "in the cloud" but I will admit that's somewhat tied to my old-fashioned enjoyment of holding something in my hands so that I'm responsible for its integrity, and by the way also I have generally full control over its distribution and privacy.
