Membership Categories & Applications
Active Membership
$500 annually
Active membership is available to surgeons who are board certified by the American Board of Surgery, the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, the American Board of Plastic Surgery, or their Canadian or Osteopathic equivalents. Subspecialty Certificate in Surgery of the Hand (formerly CAQ Hand) is not required. All candidates must have training in hand surgery in an accredited residency or fellowship program, a minimum of one (1) year active practice with adequate experience in hand surgery, and demonstrate competence in hand surgery. Active members must be approved by the Active Membership Committee, Board of Directors and voting AAHS members. Active members may vote and hold office in the Association.
Application Requirements:
- Application fee of $75.00 USD.
- Copy of certificate or letter from certifying board verifying board certification.
- One (1) recommendation from an Active, Retired, Emeritus, or Honorary member of AAHS (sponsor will be notified to upload letter).
- Copy of CV (should include papers, books, chapters, presentations, organizations and any other society memberships).
Affiliate Membership
$150 annually
Affiliate membership is available to individuals of the medical profession, basic science or allied services whose interests and contributions are related to the advancement of hand surgery and hand therapy. All candidates must have graduated or completed training from an accredited program; have certification, registration or licensure by state, national organization (e.g. PT, OT) or Board of specialty; have specialized training related to hand care, one year of on-the job training or adequate continuing education; and a minimum of one year of active practice. Affiliate members must be approved by the Affiliate Membership Committee, Board of Directors and voting AAHS members. Affiliate members may vote, and serve on the Board of Directors.
Application Requirements:
- Copy of certificate or letter from the certifying board or registering or licensing body verifying certification / license / credentials.
- Two (2) letters of recommendation; at least one (1) from an Active or Affiliate Member of AAHS.
- Copy of CV (include papers, books, chapters, presentations, organizations, and any other society memberships)
Candidate Membership
No Annual Dues
Candidate membership is available to students, surgeons or other individuals of the medical profession, basic sciences or allied services who are either in training or within two (2) years of completion of training in an accredited program and whose interests and contributions are related to the advancement of hand surgery and hand therapy. Subspecialty Certificate in Surgery of the Hand (formerly CAQ Hand) is not required. Candidate members must be approved by the Active Membership Committee, Board of Directors and voting AAHS members. Candidate Membership is limited to two (2) years following the completion of training at which time candidate members must convert to Active, Affiliate, or International membership. Beyond this date, they are no longer eligible for the candidate member category.
Application Requirements:
- Application fee of $25.00 USD.
- A letter from a Program Director, Program Coordinator or hand surgeon, confirming you are currently enrolled in or have recently completed an accredited program an accredited training program.
- Copy of CV, papers, books, (include papers, books, chapters, presentations, organizations, and any other society memberships)
- Copy of current board certification, if applicable.
International Membership
$165 annually
International membership is available to hand surgeons who reside and practice in countries other than the United States and Canada, who have achieved distinction in surgery in their own country, and who are members in good standing of their national surgical organization(s). International members must be approved by the Active Membership Committee, Board of Directors and voting AAHS members.

- Application fee of $75.00 USD.
- Copy of the certificate or letter from the certifying board verifying board certification.
