Gianni Rosato is the multimedia compression engineer who founded Halide Compression. With deep expertise in video and image codec development spanning AV1, VP9, WebP, and emerging standards, Gianni specializes in building high-performance encoding solutions from scratch as well as improving image compression infrastructure at scale.

Aside from creating our own Iris-WebP, Gianni started in multimedia compression working on perceptual features for the SVT-AV1 video encoder through SVT-AV1-PSY. This is where he began to work on frontier image compression technology, eventually adopted by Google's reference AV1 encoder. His open-source contributions also include developing fast perceptual image quality metrics and advancing target-quality image compression. He also co-founded The Codec Wiki, a technical resource dedicated to making advanced compression concepts accessible to development teams. Since working in open source, Gianni has been involved in contract work to improve video compression solutions for Fortune 10 clients as well as texture compression for game studios.

Gianni's approach combines low-level systems programming in C, Zig, and assembly with rigorous performance analysis. Based in Boston, Gianni consults through us on codec optimization, custom encoder development, and compression infrastructure for organizations requiring state-of-the-art image and video processing solutions.
