Announcing HacknPlan v2

Today, we are announcing the roadmap for HacknPlan v2!!

HacknPlan v2 is a major evolution of our platform, a comprehensive overhaul designed to make your game development planning more powerful, flexible, and enjoyable. This new version is not just about adding new features and a slightly prettier UI; we are rebuilding from scratch the entire frontend of the application, as well as a significant part of the backend. The goal? A faster, more intuitive, and usable project management solution for game developers.

If you read our last Dev Diary, you already know we are rolling this out iteratively module by module during 1 year or so (it’s ambitious, but we will try our best), in a way that the v2 modules are not enforced on you, so you can choose when to switch to the new experience and not being bothered in the middle of your workflow. Even after v2 is fully complete, we will still allow you to stay in v1, but we’ll give you very good reasons not to!

We’ll be delivering new modules and features as soon as they are ready and stable, but for a better understanding of the process, we grouped them into 4 bigger phases, each one with a clear goal in mind. Bear in mind this is a guideline, and we may tweak things and change priorities if we find a good reason during development, but we’ll try to stick to this plan as much as we can.

Phase 1 – Admin Migration and Recycle Bin

Migration

  • Project storage: Renewed file management experience.
  • Multilanguage support: The v2 modules will support multiple languages for the UI. Initially: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Japanese, and Mandarin. More languages can be included in the future.
  • Project and workspace administration: All the administration pages will be recreated to make them more usable and simplify the management of data at scale, including batch processing of items.
  • Project reports:
    • Metrics: Enhanced metrics with export options.
    • Burndown chart: Redesigned burndown chart with export options.
    • Worksheets: Detailed report for team work allocation and logging with details and export options.
  • Dashboards: Recreated dashboards with better design and extended functionality.

New features

  • Recycle bin: Soft deletion of items with the ability to undo. Mistakes happen; with this feature, you can recover quickly and easily.

Phase 2 – Boards and Powerful New Tools

Migration

  • Kanban boards and backlog: The kanban board you know and love, but with plenty of quality-of-life improvements, such as:
    • Enhanced performance with hundreds or even thousands of work items.
    • Improved drag and drop, including dropping tasks into user stories or dropping work items into categories or users on the left panel.
    • Better filters.
    • Collapsible columns.
    • Fully controllable using the keyboard.
    • And more…
  • Calendar: A performant calendar view with more interactivity and updated in real time.

New features

  • Query module (Studio): A new module where you create powerful data views with an advanced filter editor to retrieve project data by any criteria.
  • WYSIWYG text editor: An intuitive and modern “Notion-like” text editor for all text content, from descriptions to documentation, with real-time collaboration, slash commands, and Markdown support.
  • Documentation module: A new module to create any documentation beyond descriptions of work items or design elements. It will cover all your documentation needs so you can make HacknPlan your single source of truth.
  • Custom work item fields (Studio): Tailor work items to your specific development process with fully customizable fields.
  • New board views (Studio):
    • Table view: A clean, table layout with filtering, sorting, and inline editing, fully controllable using the keyboard.
    • Group by user story: Visualize tasks by their user story in lanes.
    • Dependencies view: Understand and manage task relationships with an interactive graph representation.
    • Sub-stages: Add depth and flexibility to your workflow by splitting stages into dedicated sub-stages for specific work item categories.

Phase 3 – Game Design Model and Automation

Migration

  • Game Design Model: Our signature tool for generating your game design documentation, redesigned for a better user experience and new visualization modes, including the traditional tree, and also a document-centric view.
  • Gantt chart: Visualize timelines and dependencies in a powerful, fully editable Gantt chart, with improved performance.
  • Project setup: A refreshed project creation process.

New features

  • Automation module (Studio): Automate repetitive manual actions and workflows to save time and reduce manual effort, using a visual programming editor.
  • Board permissions (Personal Plus / Studio): Fine-grained access control over your boards for better team coordination.

Phase 4 – The final touches

Migration

  • Layout and navigation: We’ll replace the old layout and menus with a more interactive, usable, and responsive system.
  • Search and notifications: Smarter, faster ways to find what you need and stay updated.
  • Account settings: Redesigned account management page for personal data, subscriptions, and global configuration.
  • API: We’ll extend the API with many new endpoints.

New features

  • Custom dashboards (Studio): Build personalized dashboards with the metrics and widgets you care about the most, with the layout of your choice.
  • Data import: Easily bring in data from other tools or custom origins.
  • Diagrams module (Studio): Create flowcharts, mind maps, architecture diagrams, and more within your project.
  • SSO (Studio): Single Sign-On support for streamlined enterprise access.
  • Advanced visual customization: Make HacknPlan truly your own with flexible UI styling options.

HacknPlan v2 is our biggest leap forward yet. It’s about giving you more control, more flexibility, and better tools — all built around the unique needs of game development. We’re incredibly excited to bring this to you, and we’ll be sharing updates as we roll out each phase. Make sure to follow us on X, LinkedIn, or Facebook for the latest development details!

Thanks for being part of the journey!

Happy planning!

There’s a lot of amazing stuff coming — thank you for this roadmap update. I would love to see what your Design Model looks like for HacknPlan itself — gotta be super meta right?

Haha, it is indeed meta, but not as cool as the ones for a game, lots of “boring” web development components, modules, apis…

Awesome additions, will the new version have better mobile support as well? I’ve been using Hack n’ Plan for a few years now and find myself needing to use my phone majority of the time and the current model has many issues that make it difficult to work with on the phone. The drag and drop is wonky and doesn’t always pickup the boxes for example, and the UI in general isn’t very mobile friendly.

One more thing, will all of our plans automatically move over to V2 when it drops, or will we need to manually add each item again?

Good luck with development, very excited to see what’s in store!

Yes, we forgot to mention it in the roadmap, but v2 will be mobile-friendly. You’ll see improvements as we release v2 for each module, but won’t be until the full v2 release, with the replacement of the app shell and navigation, that it feels like a mobile app.

HacknPlan v2 is just a big, progressive update, so your data and accounts won’t be affected at all. In fact, you’ll be able to switch from v1 to v2 and back anytime, and everything is backwards compatible (except the new features that are only available in v2). We are committed to making these updates as straightforward and non-disruptive as possible, so you’ll be able to adopt v2 at your own pace.
