Native American Studies: COVID-19 & Indigenous Communities

The first issue of the newspaper was printed on Feb. 21, 1828, in New Echota, Cherokee Nation (now Georgia), and edited by Elias Boudinot. It was printed in English and Cherokee, using the Cherokee syllabary created by Sequoyah.

In this episode, Bijiibah Begaye, Executive Director of Tsé Ko Community Development Corporation – founded in response to COVID relief in Coalmine Mesa; Michael Parrish, Policy Analyst at the Diné Policy Institute at Diné College, in Tsaile; and Alastair Bitsui, public health advocate and writer currently based in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Current standard data collection practices by many federal, state, and local entities effectively omit or misclassify American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) populations, both urban and rural. This is particularly concerning in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic as these current standards of practice are resulting in a gross under count of the impact COVID-19 has on Native people.
