Own and Control Versus Going Viral – Your Choice

A major blogger was “furious” (her word – not mine) with me because I chose one of her images and blog posts to feature (with proper attribution, link and call to action) on the page of this site that I knew would consistently get the most traffic and end up ranked well in the search engines.

Silly me. I thought recommending her from my top page was an excellent way to recommend and commend her.

She didn’t see it that way. She thought I had “stolen” from her. I promptly removed her image and links across my blog (even ones I had shared previously – on her request), made a sincere apology, and to this day am shaking my head about why some people prefer to feel in control by “owning” what they publish when it could be going viral so many more will find them.

Meanwhile, the page I had given her a link on is for the GrowMap anti-spambot plugin that is spreading like wildfire across the blogosphere. The official WordPress directory GrowMap antispam plugin page already shows 3,677 downloads.

Would you rather OWN what you create or let others use it to raise your visibility, traffic, subscribers and income? It is YOUR choice to make.

Bloggers, think about this before you complain about sites like MarketingTypo which used to aggregate quality marketing blog posts in our niche. While there could be duplicate content issues when they republish our posts – with attribution – most likely the search engines treat aggregators like them differently.

Even if they don’t, do you want more exposure or don’t you? THAT is the question.
