Innovation Challenges
Our Innovation Challenges are opportunities for the GreenTech community to come together and support innovative solutions addressing real-world challenges across areas including decarbonisation, biodiversity loss and realising a circular economy.
Turning real-world problems
into opportunities for change.
Long Duration Energy Storage Challenge
The WA GreenTech Hub, in partnership with government, industry and research leaders, proudly launches its inaugural Innovation Challenge – The Long Game.
The Long Game is focussed on advancing Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) solutions tailored to WA’s unique energy needs.
Our innovation Challenges are opportunities for the GreenTech community to come together and support innovative solutions addressing real-world challenges across areas including decarbonisation, biodiversity loss and realising a circular economy.
Focussing on The Long Game
Western Australia is uniquely positioned to become a world leader in the development and deployment of energy storage technologies.
Participants develop solutions that align directly to the needs of industry and communities, accelerating their own enterprise whilst realising globally relevant impact.
Our resource sector operates some of the largest and most remote sites globally. These operations require reliable and efficient energy solutions to power their activities. By integrating advanced energy storage systems, we can reduce reliance on fossil fuels, lower operational costs, and decrease greenhouse gas emissions. Similarly, many of our remote and First Nations communities face challenges with access to consistent and affordable energy. Energy storage technologies can provide these communities with stable, clean energy solutions, improving living standards and fostering economic development.
Energy storage is a critical component in the transition to a sustainable energy future, enabling us to maximise the use of renewable resources. This challenge is the GreenTech Hub’s first step towards a cleaner, greener future for WA and the first opportunity for WA GreenTech developers and other end-users to get involved.
High potential submissions, as judged by industry partners and subject matter experts, will receive a curated program of support co-designed between innovators, the Greentech Hub and key corporate, research and public sector partners.
Depending on the needs of the high-potential solutions and alignment with industry partners, support may include:
• Pilot and demonstration opportunities: Access to facilities, grid connections, or industrial sites where technologies can be tested at scale.
• Commercial pathways: Corporate offtake agreements, supply chain integration, or preferred vendor status for high-performing solutions.
• Mentorship and technical support: Access to accelerator programs, internal engineering, regulatory, or market experts to accelerate commercial readiness.
• Visibility and validation: Joint endorsement, introduction into parallel markets, or co-branding that enhances innovators’ credibility with investors and customers.
• Financial incentives: Direct cash support, scholarships, milestone payments, or in-kind contributions such as specialist software, cloud credits, or lab access.
Ask Me Anything LDES Challenge event
A virtual ‘Ask Me Anything’ event was hosted on 26 August 2025 to discuss the challenge and provide an opportunity for interested parties to ask questions prior to the opening date for submissions.
A video recording and slide deck from the event is now available.
