How do artists around the world get paid from markets where it’s difficult – if not impossible – for them to negotiate a license? One answer is collective licensing,
How do artists around the world get paid from markets where it’s difficult – if not impossible – for them to negotiate a license? One answer is collective licensing, a system where artists can earn an income stream and licensees can access a one-stop shop for images. Globally, collective licensing programs collect hundreds of millions for artists. Collective licensing legislation is also central to the discussion about how artists how can be compensated for the use of their works for generative AI.
Our presentation will cover:
• The basics of collective licensing in failed markets
• Failed markets: what they are and how collective licensing can address them
• The legislative picture: bringing collective licensing to the United States
• Collective licensing for failing markets in educational and business space
• The legislative solutions on collective licensing for generative AI
Presenter:
Rebecca Blake
Rebecca Blake is the Vice President for Interstate and Foreign Licensing and Business Development for ASCRL, the American Society for Collective Rights Licensing, the largest tax exempt trade organization for visual artists in the United States. She is working on legislative solution and on developing collective licensing programs for the internal business and educational use of visual works. Previously, she served over 30 years on the board of the Graphic Artists Guild, most recently as Advocacy Liaison (2017-2023). She also works as Design Director at Optimum Design and Consulting, a full-service design studio in New York City.

I’d like to invite you all to my home base: 54 Below, otherwise known as Broadway’s Living Room. On April 3rd at 9PM, join me for an informal get-together of the East Region over drinks! I’d like to get to know you all better and would love to see some friendly faces.
Grab a drink at the bar, get a snack from our kitchen, and settle into your seat after a half hour of chatting because at 9:30PM, theatre/indie-pop music writer and Off Broadway bandleader Ellen Winter will take the 54 Below stage to present her original new work with performances by Broadway stars Morgan Siobhan Green (Be More Chill), Jessie Shelton (Hadestown), and more.
Tickets to get into the space are complimentary via me! You’ll only be responsible for any food or drink you may feel like ordering but there is no expectation for you to.
