Launched by the Gundam Cafe located in Akihabara, the Discovery-G series is a lineup of collectible goods that combines traditional Japanese craftsmanship and art with the iconic Mobile Suit Gundam anime series. The latest lineup of traditional mecha goods has just taken launch, giving Gundam fans thermoses and plates crafted in the style of classical Japanese lacquerware and ceramics.
The plates are made in the style of Kutani-yaki, a Japanese type of pottery that uses overglaze painting and is known for its vivid colors. The dishes available include one larger plate featuring the RX-78-2 Gundam and Char's custom red Zaku, priced at 5,940 yen.
A set of smaller dishes features the RX-78-2 Gundam and Unicorn Gundam set to the famous works of the great ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai. These are available as a set for 6,050 yen.
Thermos bottles crafted in the style of Echizen lacquerware, a craft with over 1,500 years of history and known for gorgeous designs and use in wedding ceremonies, are also available. They feature artwork combining one of Mobile Suit Gundam's most classic scenes and perhaps Hokusai's most famous work, "The Great Wave off Kanagawa." They're priced at 8,580 yen.
Here's a closer look at the artwork.
All products are available to order within Japan from Premium Bandai, although those overseas should take a look at their international shipping service.
