Travel Log
I travel around the United States in a tiny camper. Someday, I’d love to own a campervan or expedition truck.
I don't actually like camping, but I do like traveling with a camper. It extends the travel experience the journey itself. I've seen so many cool things on the road that I never would have experienced just flying into a place.
Here are some of the places I’ve been (including a few from my pre-camper travel)…
United States
Connecticut
- Mystic Aquarium. An amazing aquarium! Their live show is a must-see, as are the iconic beluga whales that live there.
Florida
- Disney World. I’m very much a Disney addict. I try to go every year.
- The Keys. We made it to mile marker 0 in Key West, ate some amazing Cuban food, saw the elusive Key Deer, and stayed on a gorgeous nature preserve.
- NASA Kennedy Space Center. A bit overpriced, but being able to see the decommissioned Atlantis Space Shuttle in person was truly breathtaking.
- The Fountain of Youth. More educational than I expected! Worth a trip if you’re passing through the area.
- Blowing Rock Preserve. Nice hiking trails through mangroves bring you to a limestone coast that shoots water 50 feet in the air.
- Lion Country Safari. In addition to the drive-thru portion, there’s a whole walk-thru zoo included with admission. We fed giraffes!
Georgia
- Tybee Island. A cute, quirky beach town with a great marine science center.
- Jekyll Island. Slow roads, gorgeous trees, a winding bike path, and an awesome turtle sanctuary.
- Savannah. Very walkable. Beautiful buildings, fountains, and trees.
Massachusetts
- King Richard’s Faire. A seriously epic renaissance fair. You can ride a unicorn!
- Boston Museum of Science. An absolutely amazing with some amazing exhibits.
- New England Aquarium. Known for their penguins and harbor seals.
New Hampshire
- Santa’s Village. A Santa-themed amusement park. Seriously.
- Squam Lake Natural Science Center. Learn about animals and nature.
- Ice Castles. Literally castles made out of ice.
New York
- Lake George. I have fond memories of this place as a kid as a hippie town, but it feels more commercial and less quaint as an adult.
- The American Museum of Natural History. We spent a whole day there and it wasn’t enough. We need to go back!
North Carolina
- Cape Fear Botanical Garden. A delightful place to get lost for a few hours.
Pennsylvania
- Valley Forge National Park. Where George Washington took refuge during the Revolutionary War. An impromptu stop on our way South.
Rhode Island
- Newport. Nice beaches, great food, and over-priced shopping. The cliff walk is fun, and so is downtown at night.
- Roger Williams Park Zoo. A truly extraordinary zoo with so much to do! Make sure to take a photo sitting on the iconic bronze dog statue.
South Carolina
- South of the Border. An absolute dump of a roadside attraction, but also iconic.
- Hilton Head National RV Resort. This place is like a luxury hotel. Great food, tons of activities, and a fantastic pool. We’ve extended our stay every time.
Virginia
- Colonial Williamsburg. An immersive way to experience history.
- Shenandoah Caverns. An underground cave system.
- Shenandoah Valley Campground. A campground overrun with bunnies!
- Virginia Beach. A city on the beach. Nice board walk, really cool Poseidon statue, and interesting street artists.
Australia
New South Wales
- Newcastle. I spent a semester abroad at the University of New Castle. The city is home to the band Silverchair.
- The Three Sisters. A stunning natural rock formation with the world’s steepest rail car. We got to spend some time at a vineyard afterwards.
- Sydney. I got to walk the Sydney Harbor Bridge, saw a boat made of beer cans, strolled to the stunning Chinese Garden of Friendship, and explored an aquarium.
Queensland
- Cairns Tropical Zoo. A zoo with heaps of indigenous Australian animals.
- Snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef. An all-day catamaran trip out to the reef and back, with snorkeling, lunch, and a stop at a sandy atoll.
- Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park. A cultural center operated by the indigenous custodians of the land. A really cool experience!
New Zealand
North Island
- Museum of New Zealand. An absolutely amazing museum and a wonderful introduction into New Zealand’s culture and history.
- Lord of the Rings Tour. The tour guides joking called themselves Collin and Semi-Collin. I also had my first introduction to tea and biscuits. Yum!
South Island
- Franz Joseph Glacier. Climbed the glacier. Glanced down into some truly terrifying fissures. Fun stuff!
- Christchurch. An absolutely stunning city. Great food and incredible architecture.
- Charleston. Soooo many sheep. There’s even a statue honoring sheep. Literally.
- Milford Sound. Took a boat tour through the most stunning fjords you can see outside of Scandinavia.
- Glow Worm Caves. Trekked through the caves of Te Anau and got see glow worms in real life.
- Queenstown. The thing I remember most about Queensland is all of the cool international travelers I met at the hostel.
- Penguin Sanctuary. Got to see some wild nesting penguins in Dunedin, which is literally below the antarctic circle and absurdly cold!
