Our mission is to cultivate a responsible stewardship of coastal Georgia’s natural resources through education, conservation, and research.

The Tybee Island Marine Science Center offers a dynamic marine science and nature-based experience for island visitors, school groups, and scout troops all year round. Whether we’re on the beach, in the marsh, or in our Open-Air Classroom, our exhibits and programs showcase Georgia’s marine life and coastal ecology.

Check out our coastal galleries full of live animal exhibits, interactive stations and life-size animal replicas, plus a fossil room, pirate ship playground, and more!

*We are closed on Tuesdays for tank maintenance, but our public Walks, Talks, and Treks and group programs are available every day!

Sea Turtle Nesting

Updates

From May through October, sea turtle nesting season is in full swing on Tybee Island. Our dedicated volunteers with the Tybee Island Sea Turtle Project patrol the beach each morning, searching for new nests and protecting them throughout the season. As hatchlings prepare to emerge, teams keep a close watch—especially during the exciting moment of a “boil,” when around 100 baby turtles surface and make their way to the ocean. Follow along for the latest nest discoveries, hatch dates, and excavation updates—and don’t forget to meet our resident marine debris ambassadors.

Where's Westie

On Sept. 6, 2025, we released the three-year old loggerhead sea turtle "Westie" out into the ocean. Westie is the first TIMSC marine debris ambassador to be equipped with a tracker, thanks to local environmental organization Save Sea Life. We will be posting updates every Wednesday here and on our Facebook page, so follow along!

Sea Camp

Is your child a budding scientist or just loves the beach? Our summer Sea Camp packs tons of fun experiences into week-long programs, including sifting for marine creatures with a seine net, poking around the marsh for crabs, searching for dolphins out on a boat—even dissecting a squid in our outdoor classroom!

Campers learn hands-on about the wonders of the Georgia coast and make memories that last a lifetime. Be sure to register early—spots are limited and fill up fast!
