Working as a Naturopath
Professional registration is typically achieved through membership of a recognised professional association, rather than simple direct individual registration with the GNC. This helps support standards, accountability, and public confidence across natural healthcare disciplines.
The GNC supports a professional framework for naturopathy in the UK. Practitioners accepted onto the register may be listed as Registered Naturopaths or Associate Naturopaths, depending on their training background and scope of practice.
Registered Naturopaths
Registered Naturopaths typically complete substantial professional training, often including at least three years of part-time study. This usually includes full training in at least one major therapeutic discipline, such as:
- Herbal medicine
- Nutritional medicine
- Acupuncture
- Osteopathy
- Traditional Chinese Medicine
In addition, practitioners are expected to develop broader naturopathic understanding, clinical judgement, and the ability to support clients from a holistic perspective.
Holistic Therapeutic Approaches
Naturopathic practice is not limited to one therapy. It is grounded in a wider approach to health that considers structure, function, lifestyle, and the body’s natural capacity for balance. Practitioners are trained to apply their therapeutic discipline within this broader naturopathic framework.
You can find practitioners within this framework using our Find a Practitioner search tool.
Associate Naturopaths
Some practitioners are listed as Associate Naturopaths in the Find a Practitioner register. These practitioners are fully qualified in at least one therapeutic discipline taught from a naturopathic perspective, such as:
- Naturopathic nutrition
- Colon hydrotherapy
- Hijama
- Osteopathy
- Homeopathy
- Herbalism and naturopathic herbal medicine
