Wanted to share this with my friends who don't necessarily FB, too - I'm interested enough I'll check out the rest of the series over the course of the week.

I want to start a meme
and see if it catches on. I'm calling it the, "What the Heck is THAT?!!!" meme. Here's my thought:
Do you have a something? Something unusual, remarkable, downright strange? Something that you have no idea what it's for or how to use it? Take a picture of it and post it for other folks to look at. Ask them to come up with uses/functions for this thing (real or imaginary, but please differentiate unless it's painfully obvious that you've gone off on a wild flight of fancy) and post those in response. Then ask them to post their own What the Heck is THAT?!!! pic. I'll start the bidding with this decidedly odd device rescued from my late uncle's house:

What is it? What's it for? How do I use it?

Can't wait to see what you come up with! :D

yeah, it's down in TX (Austin area), but it's pretty damn cool stuff. If what his students are turning out is any criteria, he's an excellent teacher!

Haiti relief - another way to donate
For those who have/use a Discover card, Discover has set up a way to directly donate your cash rewards toward Haiti relief and is matching those donations dollar for dollar. They don't seem to be advertising this, though (as far as I've seen), so I thought i'd put it out where a few people might see it, at least.

everything new is old again
So, Baker built and sold (according to Jay Leno) THOUSANDS of safe, "green" electric vehicles before 1920?

why are we driving internal combustion cars? (not buying Leno's explanation, but maybe that's just me)

What I did at work today
Couldn't figure out how to get in here, so the pic is my userpic for this post. We had a small (8") snake of indeterminate species wander its way into our office building today. Coloration would seem to indicate that he's a very young something-other-than-a-grass-or-garter-snake. Several folks clustered around to take pics and comment, but no-one seemed to want to pick him up. After displaying him for the photo op (and being urinated on for my trouble) I deposited him in a nice, sunlit grassy patch outside - hopefully he'll be able to find someplace warm to hide before the weather turns again.

politics, specifically Cass Sunstein
Mr. Sunsteing is getting a lot of press lately. Normally, I try to stay out of political discussions, but my brother has been spouting nonsense he hears on Fox News and I had to do some poking around to set him straight (not that I have, but I'm trying). In the process I learned some things that the media seems to be trying very hard to obscure, so I thought I'd share them.

politics and image
Recent news article about Sen Clinton:

http://www.upi.com/Top_News/2009/06/18/Clinton-falls-fractures-elbow/UPI-58991245325338/

The significance of the article is slight to pretty much everyone but the senator. What caught my co-worker's eye and prompted me to write this is the photograph. I can't imagine that the editors didn't have access to a more flattering image. I'm quite certain a quick Google search would turn up dozens (yes, I realize they're not publishable - not my point). It seems to me that the use of such an un-flattering image must be a political statement on the part of the editor, possibly unconscious, but political none-the-less. The woman has just suffered significant physical injury - what is the point of adding social/political damage to that without cause? I realize our media is not un-biased or particularly ethical, this just struck me as beyond the pale, even for them.

Voting
Had an interesting thought as I was getting ready for work this morning. Occurred to me to wonder whether our soldiers fighting overseas would be able to exercise their right to vote in the coming election. I'm sure many of them want to for a wide variety of reasons. So I did a little poking around and thought I'd share what I found.

I'm glad to see at least some of the CO's are making sure the soldiers under their command are getting help to vote. Sounds like the states could take some cues there.

Interesting, yes-no?

Irony? You're soaking in it!
The subject line may be vaguely mis-leading, but there is *some* irony involved here. So, I've been thinking for a while that I'd like to have some feline companionship. I like the company of cats, I love faithanne's two beautiful siamese, I've even been working on a cat tower for the last several months (converting an old entertainment center into a cat play castle - it's bogged down at the carpet-and-padding stage). I'd also about come to the conclusion that I was not prepared to have a cat (or two, as I'd prefer), for various reasons of monetary and logistical consideration. Then, I acquired temporary kittens. A friend of my brother's was staying with me during some relationship issues with an ex and she brought with her two 3-month-old felines (and a small child, but that's another story). She and the child have since moved out, but the apartment complex she moved into won't allow pets, so my temporary kittens were threatening to turn permanent until sherrian agreed to take them in.

However, and here is where the irony comes in, faithanne recently found, in the parking lot of COSI (Center Of Science and Industry, for those not familiar Columbus, OH), a large, black cat named Cosi (according to his collar tag). Thinking the local mascot had gotten out of someone's office, she took the poor, overheated animal inside to inquire. The staff were thoroughly confused, as they have no mascot. According to his collar tag, Cosi belonged to an address on State Street (not far from COSI, but not terribly near, either). After failing to receive return calls from the number listed on Cosi's collar tag, faithanne would happily have kept him, but she already has the above-mentioned pair of siamese and the three of them did not get along well. So, Cosi has come to live with me, my temporary kittens (Toby Jr and Furocious, for the moment) will be going to live with sherrian on Saturday, and everyone is happy!
