  1. refactor turbopack-node to run webpack loaders via nodejs worker_threads
  2. the child_proccess loader runner is keep in the crate feature to run unit tests in turbopack-tests or run turbopack-cli
  3. if wanting to switch back to child_proccess loader runner, change features of turbopack_node/worker_pool to turbopack_node/process_pool in crate next-swc-napi
  4. after switched to worker_threads loader runner, debugging with CDP (spawn child_process via --inspect-brk) doesn't work anymore, but you can use breakpoint debugging in IDE (like vscode) directly

Worker thread doesn't exit when receiving unexpected message types, causing potential hangs or invalid state, while child_process version does exit

Fix on Vercel

Sync perf optimization from vercel/next.js#86266:
- Pre-allocate TaskChannels to avoid HashMap lookups during send/recv
- Make worker_pool take priority when both features are enabled
…t and optimize channel allocation

- Make worker_pool take priority when both features are enabled
- Change cfg conditions from #[cfg(feature = "process_pool")] to
  #[cfg(all(feature = "process_pool", not(feature = "worker_pool")))]
- Pre-allocate TaskChannels to avoid HashMap lookups during send/recv
- Remove unused #[allow(unused)] attributes on napi exports
- Clean up unused helper functions (send_message_to_worker, recv_task_message, etc.)

import { workerData } from 'worker_threads'

// This is needed for hijack process.cwd in worker, it's safe because
// process in worker thread is isolated to schedule thread.

this isn't anything special about process it is really just that all global symbols are isolated across worker threads... right?

Yeah. Global variables of process in worker are inherited from parent process by default, then they will be isolated across parent process and worker threads. We need set the right cwd for webpack loaders here. I add the comment to explain that setting the process.cwd in worker has no side effects to next.js main thread.

@mischnic explained this in the slack channel:

it's expected because they are imported from swc/index.js which is unfortunately needed at runtime with output:standalone (a long standing issue unrelated to your change)

This was mostly LLM-generated, but it's just moving things around and threading through a config option.

We'd like to be able to turn this on/off with an experimental config option:
\- Fixes issues where RA thinks a bunch of code is dead.
\- Lets us isolate potential issues to the worker thread implementation.
\- Provides an escape hatch for users in case there are issues.
\- Better fits the cargo "additive feature" model.
