New directive NetLabel= provides a method for integrating dynamic network
configuration into Linux NetLabel subsystem rules, used by Linux security
modules (LSMs) for network access control. The option expects a whitespace
separated list of NetLabel labels. The labels must conform to lexical
restrictions of LSM labels. When an interface is configured with IP addresses,
the addresses and subnetwork masks will be appended to the NetLabel Fallback
Peer Labeling rules. They will be removed when the interface is
deconfigured. Failures to manage the labels will be ignored.

Example:

With the above rules for interface eth0, when the interface is configured with
an IPv4 address of 10.0.0.0/8, systemd-networkd performs the equivalent of
netlabelctl operation

$ sudo netlabelctl unlbl add interface eth0 address:10.0.0.0/8 label:system_u:object_r:localnet_peer_t:s0

Result:

$ sudo netlabelctl -p unlbl list
...

btw, if the goal here is to mark packets based on the interfaces they are on, then going by IP address/mask means we'll be abiguous if the same IP address range is available on multiple interfaces. Hence, isn't there a proper way to do this in kernel, i.e. match packets by interface instead of IP range?

(my educated guess is that this is hard, because interfaces for outgoing packets are only available late, after the routing decision took place, but still makes me wonder if that wouldn't make more sense? or is the goal to actually influence routing decisions based on netlabel?)

It looks like this PR is only exposing the static/fallback labeling functionality of NetLabel which assigns a security label to incoming traffic that matches a particular address/network. Here is the relevant section from the netlabelctl(8) manpage:

       unlbl

       The  unlabeled  (unlbl) module controls the unlabeled protocol which is
       used both when labeling outgoing traffic is not desired as well as when
       unlabeled traffic is received by the system.  This module allows admin‐
       istrators to block all unlabeled packets from the  system  through  the
       "accept"  flag and assign static, or fallback, security labels to unla‐
       beled traffic based on the inbound network  interface  and  source  ad‐
       dress.

       accept on|off
              Toggle the unlabeled traffic accept flag.

       add default|interface:<dev> address:<addr>[/<mask>] label:<label>
              Add a new static/fallback entry.

       del default|interface:<dev> address:<addr>[/<mask>]
              Delete an existing static/fallback entry.

I think I haven't tried those. The leases with the same address work. When the address is dropped, the label associated with the address is removed and when the new address is gained, the corresponding label is reinstalled. But if the operations could happen in the wrong order, remove operation executed late could delete the new label, since the delete command doesn't specify the label. Then also overlapping but different leases might be a problem (for example, 192.168.0.0/24 vs. 192.168.0.0/16). Perhaps the operations should be synchronous. I'll do more testing.

The labeling command indeed specifies the interface. It's possible to use default rules which apply to all interfaces but we're not using them here.

The labels can be used for access control where the source IP address determines the label. With SELinux, the labels can be used with peer class, for example:

allow mozilla_t localnet_peer_t:peer recv;

Domains without such allow rules can't receive anything from addresses labeled localnet_peer_t.

Ok, so let's maybe take a step back: @topimiettinen what's your usecase for all this? How do you intend to use this? Can you elaborate?

Like certain firewall rules, it's not possible to configure NetLabel fallback rules when the network interface specified in the rules doesn't exist (yet). This can happen because the module isn't loaded yet or the hardware hasn't been plugged. Waiting for all interfaces to be available conflicts with the goal that security critical network configuration should be applied as early as possible at boot. See also netlabel/netlabel_tools#8 and netlabel/netlabel_tools#9.

With this systemd feature, static part of NetLabel configuration can be applied very early (after SELinux policy is loaded i.e. PID1 start in case of using NetLabel with SELinux LSM). Later networkd will apply the interface specific rules when configuring the interface, so the time window where the configuration isn't secure is minimized, possibly there is no window.

there can be only one NetLabel for (interface, address) tuple 🤦
when adding, kernel adds the address to hash table applying also the netmask (net/netlabel/netlabel_unlabeled.c), but on removal, an exact match is required without netmask applied (net/netlabel/netlabel_addrlist.c), so apply the mask on both operations.
don't remove NetLabels unconditionally but only if configuration exists

I didn't test the DHCP address change yet.

Added functions to generate netmasks for IPv6 and generic IP family addresses.

New directive `NetLabel=` provides a method for integrating static and dynamic network configuration into Linux NetLabel subsystem rules, used by Linux Security Modules (LSMs) for network access control. The label, with suitable LSM rules, can be used to control connectivity of (for example) a service with peers in the local network. At least with SELinux, only the ingress can be controlled but not egress. The benefit of using this setting is that it may be possible to apply interface independent part of NetLabel configuration at very early stage of system boot sequence, at the time when the network interfaces are not available yet, with netlabelctl(8), and the per-interface configuration with systemd-networkd once the interfaces appear later. Currently this feature is only implemented for SELinux. The option expects a single NetLabel label. The label must conform to lexical restrictions of LSM labels.
