follow up on https://github.com/sourcegraph/sourcegraph/issues/45750
this requires a lot of boilerplate change so I don't want to confuse the PR

bearing in mind that this won't actually have any effect until https://github.com/sourcegraph/sourcegraph/issues/42459 is fixed
