Description

Fixes #3570 : Overwriting params for rule inheritance did not work properly when the parent rule did not define a params directive at all.

QC

  • The PR contains a test case for the changes or the changes are already covered by an existing test case.
  • The documentation (docs/) is updated to reflect the changes or this is not necessary (e.g. if the change does neither modify the language nor the behavior or functionalities of Snakemake).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved handling of rule parameters to prevent errors when parameters are missing or set to None.
  • Tests

    • Added new tests to verify correct behavior when inheriting and overriding rule parameters.
    • Included expected output files to validate test results.

📝 Walkthrough

"""

Walkthrough

A conditional check was added to safely unpack rule parameters in ruleinfo.py, preventing errors when params is None. A new test suite was introduced to verify parameter inheritance and overriding in rules, including a Snakefile, an expected output file, and a corresponding test function.

Changes

File(s) Change Summary
src/snakemake/ruleinfo.py Added conditional unpacking for params to handle None values safely.
tests/test_params_empty_inherit/Snakefile, tests/test_params_empty_inherit/expected-results/test.txt Added new test scenario: parent/child rule with parameter inheritance and expected output.
tests/tests.py Added new test function test_params_empty_inherit to run the new scenario.

Objective Addressed Explanation
Prevent unpacking error when parent rule lacks params ( #3570 )
Ensure parameter inheritance and overriding works as expected in rule usage ( #3570 )
Add test to verify correct handling of params inheritance and overriding ( #3570 )

🧹 Nitpick comments (3)
tests/test_params_empty_inherit/expected-results/test.txt (1)

1-1: Consider adding a trailing newline for POSIX-compatibility

Many text-processing tools (e.g. cat, grep) assume files end with a newline.
It’s harmless here, but appending \n avoids surprises when these files are inspected or concatenated.

src/snakemake/ruleinfo.py (1)

79-83: Robust fix – unwrap params only when not None

👍 The guard elegantly prevents ValueError when the parent rule lacks a params block.
Small nit: using {} rather than dict() is marginally faster and matches surrounding style.

-else ((), dict())
+else ((), {})
🧰 Tools
🪛 Pylint (3.3.7)

[refactor] 82-82: Consider using '{}' instead of a call to 'dict'.

(R1735)

tests/test_params_empty_inherit/Snakefile (1)

5-9: Parent rule lacks explicit output: could confuse future maintenance

output[0] is used, yet the rule declares no output: section.
While the test never invokes parent directly, adding a dummy output (or marking the rule as norun: True) clarifies intent and prevents accidental execution.

 rule parent:
- run:
+ output:
+ "dummy_placeholder.txt"
+ run:
         with open(output[0], "w") as f:
             f.write(params.a)

🔇 Additional comments (2)
tests/tests.py (1)

2473-2476: Test registration looks good – please ensure isolation

The new test simply delegates to run(...), which is fine.
Verify that the directory name test_params_empty_inherit is unique (it is) and that no global state (e.g. env vars) leaks from preceding tests.

tests/test_params_empty_inherit/Snakefile (1)

10-14: Override block is clear – no issues

use rule ... with: correctly overrides both output and params; newfound bug is covered.
