Motivation

When building sglang from source with

pip install -e "python"

setuptools-scm will search for the latest tag on main branch, and apply that version. However after we changed the release workflow, the latest tags only appear on release branches, so the version built from source is fixed to 0.5.6.post3.xxx

Modifications

Detect tags from all the branches, so the latest tag can be applied.

Version (installed from source) before this change:

sglang 0.5.6.post3.dev1278+gad1b4e472 /sgl-workspace/sglang/python

After this change:

sglang 0.5.7 /sgl-workspace/sglang/python

Summary of Changes

Hello @Fridge003, I'm Gemini Code Assist1! I'm currently reviewing this pull request and will post my feedback shortly. In the meantime, here's a summary to help you and other reviewers quickly get up to speed!

This pull request addresses a critical versioning problem encountered when installing sglang from source. Previously, setuptools-scm failed to identify the most recent release tags due to a change in the release workflow, leading to an incorrect, older version being reported. The changes ensure that the build process accurately reflects the latest available version, providing users with the correct and up-to-date software when installing directly from the repository.

Highlights

  • Versioning Fix for Source Installs: Modified the git_describe_command in pyproject.toml to correctly detect the latest sglang version tags from all branches, resolving an issue where source installations were stuck at an outdated version (0.5.6.post3.xxx) instead of the current one (e.g., 0.5.7).

Code Review

This pull request aims to correct the versioning when installing from source by considering tags from all branches, not just the current branch's history. The proposed change successfully identifies the latest tag but has a side effect of losing the development version information (i.e., the commit count since the last tag). My review includes a suggestion to fix this by manually constructing the version string in a way that setuptools-scm can parse correctly, preserving both the latest tag and the development commit information.
