I'm very late to the party, but this is a bad idea. It has very "Google kills Google Reader" energy.

It's good to clean things up here, we don't do it a lot. We did discuss our processes for doing this with better communications in the ROS PMC meetings with the above cross referenced breakages.

I think it would be valuable to point to there are reasonable alternatives such as

It might be good to add that in as a comment to the release notes @ahcorde with guidance on how to quickly migrate.
