Why all this corporate nonsense text? Just say you want to cut cost and thus remove the expensive models. |

"GitHub's investment in students is not slowing down. We are committed to ensuring that Copilot remains a powerful, free tool for verified students, and we will continue to improve and expand the student experience over time." is statement is straight up lie |

With the GitHub Student Pack subscription, the new usage-based billing system feels completely unreasonable. Students are allocated only 200 AI credits per month, which is shockingly low. To illustrate: I submitted a single prompt asking Copilot (Claude Haiku 4.5 model) to refactor one file and generate unit tests. In just 3 minutes, that single request consumed 25% of my monthly allowance. Put differently, students effectively get only 4–6 premium requests per month. That is drastically insufficient for any meaningful academic or project work. Compared to the previous billing system, the number of free requests has plummeted by over 99% 😨. This makes GitHub Copilot practically unusable for students. By contrast, alternatives like Cursor provide 5 free requests every 5 days, which adds up to ~30 per month—already far more generous. Other platforms such as Codex or Claude agents offer more sustainable options for learning and experimentation. In its current form, the new billing system undermines Copilot’s accessibility for students and discourages adoption. If GitHub intends to support education, this model needs urgent reconsideration. |

By far the worst update, killed the student plan completely, i used the Auto model selection and still finished the complete monthly in a single day, and the output is absolutely nothing. Hoping for a better alternative to show up now |

Hi GitHub Copilot Team, I have been a verified student using GitHub Copilot for the past 8 months, and I want to share how disappointed I am with the recent changes made on June 1, 2026. For almost 8 months, I used Copilot every single day — 20 to 25 days a month — and my credits would only reach 50% to 70% usage by the end of the month. It was working perfectly for my student workflow. But after the switch to credit-based billing, I used Copilot for just 1 hour and already consumed 67% of my credits. That is not a small change — that is a complete breakdown of what was promised to students. I understand that GitHub needs to manage costs, but this change has made the Student plan nearly useless for real daily coding work. Students like me rely on Copilot to learn, build projects, and grow our skills. We are not big enterprises — we are individuals trying to improve ourselves with limited resources. I respectfully ask GitHub to:
Please listen to your student community. We supported Copilot from the beginning, and we deserve better than this. Thank you for reading. |

Actually Copilot pro is very essential. As we are varified students, please enable the copilot pro benefits for us. please github admin. please we need it. |

Thank you for the transparency and for keeping Copilot free for students. Two million students using it shows how valuable this program is. I understand the need to remove premium models like GPT-5.3-Codex and Claude Sonnet to keep the service sustainable. Auto mode sounds like a reasonable compromise. A few questions and suggestions: Will students be able to see which model Auto mode selected for their task? Transparency helps learning. Are there plans to add more models specifically optimized for learning and debugging? Those are most helpful for students. The 200 monthly AI credits limit is clear. But what happens when a student runs out? Will completions still work? Thank you for adding the option to upgrade to Pro while keeping Student Pack benefits. That is a fair path for students who need premium models. Overall, this is a balanced update. Free access for millions is better than paid access for a few. Keep listening to student feedback. |

The fact that GitHub is still offering this student plan knowing how terrible the limits are is a disgrace. Either provide students who have a qualified for the student plan decent limits that they can actually do useful work with for their studies or don't provide a "student plan" at all. The 200 AI credits barely give you an hour of work or less for the whole month from what I've tested and that is just not acceptable. |

Well time to use something else, at this point using opencode with random free providers is better than this. |

GitHub’s student program: Give you a Ferrari (Sonnet) during the presentation, but deliver a tricycle (Haiku) with 1 liter of gas a month when you actually start. Keep your $2 charity, the stinginess is louder than the 'support' |

In real life the people who don't pay don't even get a 1 liter of anything. Being a student is not an exception.

I believe it makes more sense to leave the previous format with lower-tier models, but at least one can still have a flavour of what coding with AI means and how agentic workflow can shape the progress. Instead of trying to give us the latest models but constraining the experience to just three iterations and that's it

Important
Update June 1: Copilot Student plan will now receive 200 monthly included usage AI Credits. Users on the Copilot Student plan will continue to have unlimited code completions.
At GitHub, we believe the next generation of developers should have access to the latest industry technology. That’s why we provide students with free access to the GitHub Student Developer Pack, run the Campus Experts program to help student leaders build tech communities, and partner with Major League Hacking (MLH) and Hack Club to support student hackathons and youth-led coding communities. It’s also why we offer verified students free access to GitHub Copilot—today, nearly two million students are using it to build, learn, and explore new ideas.
Copilot is evolving quickly, with new capabilities, models, and experiences shipping fast. As Copilot evolves and the student community continues to grow, we need to make some adjustments to ensure we can provide sustainable, long-term GitHub Copilot access to students worldwide.
Our commitment to providing free access to GitHub Copilot for verified students is not changing. What is changing is how Copilot is packaged and managed for students.
What this means for you
Starting today, March 12, 2026, your complimentary Copilot access will be managed under a new GitHub Copilot Student plan, alongside your existing GitHub Education benefits. Your academic verification status will not change, and there is nothing you need to do to continue using Copilot. You will see that you are on the GitHub Copilot Student plan in the UI, and your existing premium request unit (PRU) entitlements will remain unchanged.
As part of this transition, however, some premium models, including GPT-5.3-Codex, GPT-5.4, and Claude Opus and Sonnet models, will no longer be available for self-selection under the GitHub Copilot Student Plan. We know this will be disappointing, but we’re making this change so we can keep Copilot free and accessible for millions of students around the world.
That said, through Auto mode, you'll continue to have access to a powerful set of models from providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. We'll keep adding new models and expanding the intelligence in Auto mode that helps match the right model to your task and workflow. We support a global community of students across thousands of universities and dozens of time zones, so we’re being intentional about how we roll out changes. Over the coming weeks, we will be making additional adjustments to available models or usage limits on certain features — the specifics of which we'll be testing with your feedback.
We want your input
Your experience matters to us, and your feedback will directly shape how this plan evolves. Leave a comment below, what's working for you, what gets in the way, and what you need most. We will also be continuing to host 1:1 conversations with students, educators, and Campus Experts, and using insights from our recent November 2025 student survey to help inform what's next.
GitHub's investment in students is not slowing down. We are committed to ensuring that Copilot remains a powerful, free tool for verified students, and we will continue to improve and expand the student experience over time.
We will share updates as we learn more from testing and your feedback. Thank you for building with us.
Update March 13: We've now added the option so folks can upgrade from your GitHub Copilot Student plan to a paid GitHub Copilot Pro or GitHub Copilot Pro+ plan if you want to, while retaining the rest of your GitHub Student Pack benefits.
Update April 27: As part of these reliability updates, GPT-5.3-Codex has been removed from the model picker for the Copilot Student plan. The model will still be available to Copilot Student users via auto model selection.
