The ncov remote_files helper functions were updated in nextstrain/ncov#1180 to be compatible with Snakemake >=8. These are useful for supporting remote file inputs across all pathogens, e.g. it is being added to zika in nextstrain/zika#80.

These should be moved into this shared repo to be vendored to other pathogens.
