Give up GitHub #1405

@bertfrees

Description

@bertfrees

The Liblouis project intends to become less dependent on GitHub services, so that one day it becomes feasible to migrate to other services. The services for which we currently rely on GitHub are listed on this wiki page.

Find out more about the motives to move away from GitHub on Software Freedom Conservancy's Give Up GitHub site.

Some next steps could be:

  • Let our users know our intention by including the following snippet in our README:

We're Using GitHub Under Protest

This project is currently hosted on GitHub. This is not ideal; GitHub is a proprietary, trade-secret system that is not Free and Open Souce Software (FOSS). We are deeply concerned about using a proprietary system like GitHub to develop our FOSS project. We have an open ticket where the project contributors are actively discussing how we can move away from GitHub in the long term. We urge you to read about the Give up GitHub campaign from the Software Freedom Conservancy to understand some of the reasons why GitHub is not a good place to host FOSS projects.

If you are a contributor who personally has already quit using GitHub, please check this resource for how to send us contributions without using GitHub directly.

Any use of this project's code by GitHub Copilot, past or present, is done without our permission. We do not consent to GitHub's use of this project's code in Copilot.

  • Make more use of shell scripts and Docker in our workflows
  • Host assets directly on our web page
  • Possibly create a final Github release that refers to our website for the complete list of releases
  • Write self-explanatory commit messages that need to links to Github issues
  • Explore SourceHut (we could e.g. start with hosting the louis-parser-nom project there)
