Currently, source freshness checks break when the task running directories are dynamically determined based on the working directory. After these changes, checks are correctly performed on a per-directory basis and tasks are not always re-run whenever the working directory is changed. Closes #7573.

Summary

  • Included task running directories into hashes used for source freshness checks
  • Added related e2e test

Summary of Changes

Hello @rooperuu, I'm Gemini Code Assist1! I'm currently reviewing this pull request and will post my feedback shortly. In the meantime, here's a summary to help you and other reviewers quickly get up to speed!

This pull request addresses a critical issue where task source freshness checks failed when tasks were executed from dynamically determined directories. By incorporating the task's working directory into the hashing mechanism for freshness checks, tasks will now correctly identify when their sources have changed relative to their execution context, leading to more reliable and efficient task execution without redundant re-runs.

Highlights

  • Improved Source Freshness Checks: The system now correctly performs source freshness checks on a per-directory basis, resolving issues where checks would break with dynamically determined task running directories.
  • Dynamic Task Directory Awareness: Task running directories are now included in the hashes used for source freshness checks, preventing unnecessary task re-runs when the working directory changes.
  • New End-to-End Test: An end-to-end test has been added to validate the improved source freshness behavior with dynamic working directories.
Changelog
  • e2e/tasks/test_task_source_freshness_with_cwd
    • Added a new end-to-end test to verify task source freshness with dynamic working directories.
  • src/cli/tasks/info.rs
    • Imported task_cwd function.
    • Modified outputs.paths call to pass the task's root directory for output path resolution.
  • src/cli/tasks/validate.rs
    • Updated task output validation to use outputs.patterns() instead of outputs.paths(task).
  • src/task/task_source_checker.rs
    • Modified sources_hash_path to include the task's root directory in the hash calculation.
    • Updated source_existing_hash to use the new sources_hash_path signature, incorporating the root directory.
    • Adjusted sources_are_fresh to pass the task's root directory to outputs.paths.
    • Modified save_checksum to pass the task's root directory to outputs.paths for both auto and explicit outputs.
  • src/task/task_sources.rs
    • Added std::path::Path import.
    • Introduced a patterns() method to return output patterns without task context.
    • Modified paths() method to accept a root path and delegate to auto_path with root.
    • Updated auto_path() to include the task's root directory in the hash calculation for auto-generated output paths.

Code Review

This pull request correctly addresses an issue with source freshness checks for tasks that have dynamically determined running directories. The core of the fix is to include the task's working directory in the hash used for freshness checks, which is a solid approach. The changes are applied consistently across the codebase, and a new end-to-end test effectively validates the fix. I have one suggestion for a minor refactoring to improve code clarity and avoid a redundant asynchronous call.
