In #338, we discussed the performance penalties incurred by runtime PMREM generation.

In an effort to mitigate this problem, we have also filed #342 and #341.

In addition, it would be nice to support "lazy" generation and application of PMREM so that a model and its environment can be rendered in a degraded quality state while a PMREM is being generated or downloaded over the network.
