The template hasn't been touched since it was introduced here. There are some problems with it - mainly that it's hard to know if these rules are all still relevant, and the large prose block is probably more confusing than helpful here.

I searched for some phrases from the comments and found that the template is only used in a handful of repositories, and these are almost all one-off coursework projects which were used briefly and then abandoned. Since this is unmaintained and seems to be a bit of a niche tool, it's probably not a good fit for this collection. I'll leave this open for a while in case anyone objects.

/cc @sjaeckel who first introduced it in #134

Feel free to do what you want - I am (currently) not using it (and I know it has been there and know how to restore it from history if I need it sometimes in the future)
...even if I don't understand why you would remove this template and let a lot of others that haven't been touched since they were introduced...

@sjaeckel There are several templates that look like they aren't being used much, but I just wanted to remove a few for now so that people have a chance to chime in if I've misjudged. It doesn't mean your template isn't useful or appreciated, I just don't think we need to keep it here.

Well, where should I keep it then?
I think that this is the best place where it could be, as it's the global gitignore repository.
In my eyes is this repo a huge pile of templates that give you a start to create your own gitignore, nothing more.
And only because you can't find references on it, doesn't mean that it isn't used... Not one single project I used it in is open source.
Btw. retry the same approach for the XilinxISE and ModelSim templates and I think you will find similar results... hardware projects are commonly not open source (besides some students projects).

The problem is that if only a few people use a gitignore, then nobody is really maintaining it. The tool could change and the gitignore rules become irrelevant and then we'd just be confusing someone rather than being helpful. Besides that, we've updated the README since you first added this file to point out that we're not trying to cover tools which aren't widely used.

It's nothing personal, just part of the clarification of the goal of this collection. I had noticed XilinxISE and ModelSim already, and will likely include them in the next batch of removals down the track; I thought that there would be more chance of anyone who does still use these gitignores noticing these PRs if there were only a few at a time, though.

You could, for example, put the gitignore in a public gist and then it would be discoverable. We could add a link to it in this PR so that anyone trying to find it here will know where to go.

Oh I didn't notice the change in the README and I somehow also can understand that the repo should be cleaned up a bit...

You could e.g. create a repository gitignore.deprecated or gitignore.shifted or so where you put all files that have been removed from this one? Then there would still be a single place where these can be found...
As there exists even infrastructure around this repo like https://www.gitignore.io/ I think that would be useful and could be easily integrated into a tool like that.

The site you mentioned isn't related to this repository other than that it pulls from the templates here. They add their own additional templates so you could certainly ask them to copy this template to their list and it would continue to show up on that site.

Sorry but I'm off of this discussion.

Do what you want.
