Problem Statement

External-secrets was using outdated AWS SDK v2 packages that didn't support newly launched AWS regions, including the Mexico (Central) region mx-central-1 which launched on January 14, 2025.

Additionally, the codebase lacked comprehensive region validation tests, making it difficult to verify support for all AWS regions across different partitions.

Related Issue

Fixes support for new AWS regions including mx-central-1 and 8 other regions added in AWS SDK v2 v1.39.12+.

Proposed Changes

AWS SDK Upgrade

Upgraded all AWS SDK v2 packages to their latest versions across all modules:

Main SDK: v1.39.5 → v1.39.6
Config: v1.31.16 → v1.31.19
Credentials: v1.18.20 → v1.18.23
Secrets Manager: v1.39.10 → v1.39.12
SSM: v1.66.3 → v1.67.1
STS: v1.39.0 → v1.40.1
Smithy-go: v1.23.1 → v1.23.2

Comprehensive Region Testing

Added TestAllAWSRegions function that validates 48 region/service combinations across all AWS partitions:

34 standard AWS regions (including new regions)
2 China partition regions
2 GovCloud regions
9 ISO partition regions
FIPS endpoints

This approach ensures:

All regions are validated in one maintainable test
Easy to add new regions by updating a single list
Clear documentation of which regions were added in each SDK version

Test Consolidation

Removed redundant individual test cases from TestValidateStore that duplicated region validation coverage, reducing code duplication and
improving maintainability.

Dependency Cleanup

Ran go mod tidy on all modules to remove stale dependency entries from go.sum files, removing 28 lines of outdated package references.

New Regions Supported

ap-east-2 (Asia Pacific - Hong Kong 2)
ap-southeast-5 (Asia Pacific - Melbourne)
ap-southeast-6 (Asia Pacific)
ap-southeast-7 (Asia Pacific)
mx-central-1 (Mexico Central) ⭐
eu-isoe-west-1 (EU ISO-E - UK)
us-isof-east-1, us-isof-south-1 (US ISO-F)
us-isob-west-1 (US ISO-B West)
