What was wrong?

Lots of assert statements used in non-test files.

Related to Issue #135

How was it fixed?

Replace asserts with ifs or whatever is appropriate, add error messages.

Where the asserts would have raised AssertionErrors, ValueError seems more appropriate for what's been checked.

Todo:

  • Clean up commit history
  • Add or update documentation related to these changes
  • Add entry to the release notes
