I haven't seen any evidence that this makes the optimizer more efficient, though we might revisit it again later. |

We've gotten reports recently of a couple issues with the kbn/optimizer that seem to have been popping up on overwhelmed hardware where the optimizer is consuming so many resources that everything falls apart. this is a collection of changes, including two PRs which were reverted in master, and will probably be broken up before it's ready for review.
