Description
When I select the "side-by-side, taller left" layout option, it successfully sets that as my viewing mode and displays the taller left. However, after I move to a new student to grade, it reverts to the left column not being fully expanded (despite localstorage reporting isFullLeftColumnMode as set)

Expected behavior
When I select the "side-by-side, taller left" layout option, it should be preserved when moving to a new student to grade.

To Reproduce

1. Select "side-by-side , taller left"
2. Move to next student
3. Observe layout: the left column should be expanded to its full height.

• OS: Windows 11 (also MacOS)
• Browser: Chrome 142.0.7444.176
