Situation Description & Motivation

Objective

This epic aims to implement Giardiasis surveillance in SORMAS by introducing new disease entities for Giardiasis(Giardia). The implementation will support case management, laboratory notifications, epidemiological investigations, and ECDC/WHO reporting.

Background

Giardiasis is a gastrointestinal infection caused by the protozoan parasite Giardia lamblia (also known as G. intestinalis or G. duodenalis). It is a globally distributed disease and a common cause of diarrhea, particularly in areas with inadequate sanitation and water treatment. The infection occurs through the ingestion of Giardia cysts via contaminated water, food, or direct fecal-oral transmission.

Giardia affects individuals of all ages, with higher incidence in children, travellers, and immunocompromised persons.

Giardiasis is primarily a concern for travellers, daycare attendees, and those with exposure to untreated water sources.

Luxembourg has one of the highest reported rates of giardiasis in Europe, and its being considered for inclusion in SORMAS to monitor potential public health emergencies and outbreaks.

High-Level Explanation

1. Case Management & UI Enhancements

  • Case Tabulation: Enabled "Notified" by card, "INFO" & Case Classification button(ECDC), hide "Pre-existing conditions", enable "Additional medical information" and others.

  • Hospitalization Tabulation: A new calculated field as 'Length of stay' should be added and mandating the 'reason of hospitalization' field.

  • Symptom Tabulation: Update the symptoms for Giardiasis specific(e.g., abdominalPain,Diarrhea,Nausea, eggyBurps, Vomiting, weightLoss, Dehydration and so on)

  • Epidemiological Tabulation: Update the type of activies Giardiasis specific (Travel,Exposure to recreational water, Contact with animals, Exposure to food, Sexual exposure) with its relevent details.

2. Sample

  • Sample list: The sample list will be reduced to Giardiasis specific stool, duodenum fluid, biopsy.
  • Pathogen tests: The Ppathogen tests will be reduced to Giardiasis specific(e.g., Microscopy, PCR, Antigen, Antigen rapid test)
