A list of data tools that may be of use during Code the City

Data processing

  • Simile Exhibit V2 - navigate, visualise, and repurpose data sources including APIs, JSON, Sparql. (see the tutorial page on how to use this)
  • Data Refine - used to be Google Refine. Very useful, very powerful. Watch the tutorial videos.

Data Scraping and other acquisition

  • Import.io - A free web-hosted service that promises further (maybe paid for) features. Looks like a great Help section with support, webinars etc.
  • Morph - a web-based tool from OpenAustralia. Write scrapers in Ruby, Python or PHP.
  • Portia - released recently, available via GitHub, soon to be made available as a hosted service.
  • Tabula - Extracts tabular data from PDFs. Runs under Linux, Windows and Mac. Needs Java. See also: this article
