So I'll probably, again, implement the framework for HDD samples and some drives from different era's. Then write a brief Wiki page on how-to-create a "HDD sample set", (this needs to be done for the FDD sounds as well). Then rest of the resampling and new additions is upto anybody who wants to add a new drive specific sample set.

It is complete, you can play around with it.

You can also find a predefined cfg in assets repo along with two HDD sample sets.

Thanks, meanwhile, while playing a bit (see PR 86Box/assets#8) I noticed that it seems that the 1 track seek function isn't working ? or at least on an XT (Olivetti M240) with a simulated MFM drive it seems the seek sound isn't triggered (tried using checkit to test the HD) is this something known ?

As I wrote below, the SEEK and RECALIBRATE commands did not have the correct timings implemented, that has now been rectified.

Try now, it turned out I forgot to remove the leftovers of the old SEEK implementation.

I checked with 8571, still doesn't trigger the seek audio i'm afraid
I do see the seek (in checkit) is now much slower, which is the correct behavior after these changes, but something seems missing...

So, I had another look, it seems to me (but remember i'm an idiot with this codebase...) that hdd_audio_seek is never called in hdc_st506_xt.c ?

ping @OBattler could you have a look at this before I even do a PR if this makes sense to possibly fix the issue ?

now seek audio plays on the MFM drive when running a benchmark in checkit :)

Select Generic 1992 3600 RPM drive and you can select the 3 that are currently available.
then maybe record you own SCSI drive and do a PR to add them :)

Thanks for the tip. It kinds sucks that only the sound for the 3600 RPM speed is available at this time. As for recording SCSI sounds, I don't have any equipment to test. Sorry about that.

I can only hope that sound samples of other hard speeds, 3500, 4500, 5400 and 7200 RPM are implemented soon.

Currently there isn’t a scenario for that. It’s not bound to anything. Maybe some APM/ACPI could turn the drive off, but no implementation for that yet.

I usually use WD Caviar 21200 in my VMs, so I tried making a test set of sounds for this HDD. I remade it from some real Caviar 21200 video recording.

Initially, this was a recording of CHKDSK on a real WD Caviar 21200 founded on YouTube. I mostly had to cut the recording and meticulously match the ends of the tracks to the waveform to remove any unnecessary sounds. The main difficulty was finding the right cutoff points for the audio to work well in a loop.

I doubt the original was recorded with a high-quality microphone, and the original recording had some extraneous noise that had to be cut out, but it looks like the recording was either done with a separate microphone or with a phone close to the working device, and as a result the recording is of good quality.

I just started learning how to work with sound yesterday, so maybe in the future I'll be able to improve the quality of hdd sounds and add a couple more profiles.

It took me a while to get used to and to find out what works and what does not. Good job!
