git.alepouna.net

Welcome to the alepouna.net Gitea instance!

This is a selfhosted Gitea instance to host my personal projects or repositories.

Why not use a hosted solution?

I have been using GitHub for a long time, but in February 2023 GitHub randomly decided to suspend my account, taking down all my repositories and projects, some of which I didn't have a local copy of!

The hilarious thing about that, is that they also banned their co-founder, lol: https://twitter.com/defunkt/status/1754610843361362360 Some rogue AI detection probably.

Anywhos, I decided to make the move to GitLab for all these personal projects, as I knew my account would not be suspended as GitLab is much more lenient and is also not owned by Microsoft, so thankfully no OpenAI nonsense there.

GitLab felt and worked great, I've used it a bit in the past, but not this much before. I was really interested by the UI and features it had, how it handled issues, PRs and CI, it was a great experience.

Why not use GitLab selfhosted then?

In 2024, I wanted to selfhost GitLab, but it was too much of a hassle to update and maintain for like 2 repositories, and also I've accidentally wiped the server a few times trying to fix random quirks it had.

The reason, if you are curious to why self-host, was mostly to control my data but also to unlock some features that were only available to either enterprise tiers or self hosted ones.

Don't get me wrong, GitLab is extremely powerful and feature rich, but I used about 30% of what it offered, and since it was selfhosted, I had to maintain the other 70% of the unused features too. Not just that, but GitLab is FAT. It eats a lot of resources, and even a 4 core 16GB EPYC VPS was not enough to run it fast enough for my liking, and I really diddnt want to pay more for a server just for GL.

So I decided in 2025 to selfhost Gitea instead, and here we are.

Why Gitea?

Honestly, there isn't any specific reason. I've just heard about it a lot from friends and on the net, so I decided to give it a try. So far so good.

What is this instance for?

This instance is for my personal projects and some organizations. I will not be accepting any requests to host random projects or orgs here, so please do not ask. If you are a friend or a partner, feel free to ask though!

You will mostly find projects I maintain or have created, and some organizations I am part of. I will also be using this instance as a backup for my hosted (GitHub, GitLab) projects, so you might see some random repos here that are imported with random names.

Any repository that is archived, expect 0 support or updates, as they are most likely a backup or deprecated.

What is the license of the code here?

Each repository has its own license, so please check the LICENSE file in each repository for the specific license. Repositories that do not have a license file are most likely private or not meant to be used by anyone else. All rights reserved.

I want to contribute, or open an issue, how?

Registration is enabled on this instance, so if you'd like to create an issue or comment to one, feel free to create an account for that. I recommend you use the same username as your GitHub/GitLab and link them under your profile (coming soon) Do note that I will delete inactive/unused accounts (so any account with no activity at all) ever so often.

As repository creation is disabled, you will not be able to host any repos here as a 'guest'. Creating PRs should not be an issue as forks are enabled. You are welcome to e-mail me (or generally just contact me) to discuss adding your repository here, and I will be happy to take a look.

All code contributions are welcome, please fork the repository either internally (Fork limits are different from Repo limits here) or on a Git provider of your choice and send me a link. I have setup an internal workflow to allow me to merge PRs from other Git providers, with full attribution to the original author (if you desire) so it's not a problem at all.

You can find my contact information on my main website: https://alepouna.net/contact as well as my social links under my profile here.
