Same Procedure As Every Year, James

NaNoWriMo time is approaching fast and I’m busy getting my ‘world-bible’ organized for the second part of my fantasy WIP. I’ve had a lot of fun with it lately and my head is caught up in this world, that’s why I’ve been neglecting Rochelle Wisoff-Fields’ FridayFictioneers for now. I hope to get back to that in December.

I’ve faithfully contributed to three writerly prompt hashtags over on Mastodon and this has given me so much insight into my characters and my world… it’s incredible. The hashtags there are #WordWeavers, #WritersCoffeClub and #PennedPossiblities.

I really look forward to November and hope that I can pull it through. I love the intensity of the NaNo experience, the deep-dive into the writing I never find on normal days because there’s always some ‘normal-life demand’ distracting me. November is an exception, I try to keep other favorites on hold. No binge watching, not much reading.

I’ll be gah_learner there as usual. If you want to buddy, you’ll find me there. Sorry I had the wrong username gahlearner there first. Can’t even remember my handle… 😛

NaNoWriMo And My Mojo

I wanted to write about this year’s NaNo and what it did for me for a while now, but I needed a break and some distance. I’ve participated several times before, in the write-athon in November and in the ‘do what you need’ Camp Nano in April. While they always were fun, especially with writer friends being part of the ‘Buddy’ group, the result always was awful. This time it may be different. Perhaps.

On NaNo and Writing and Stuff

So far, NaNoWriMo goes surprisingly well. I’m slowly able to beat my ideas about this story into a shape. Needless to say that I immediately see the flaws as soon as an hour or so has passed after I finished a chapter. But I won’t give in to the temptation. I’m plantsing this time, no chapter-to-chapter plan, just a very rough outline and I go with the flow and where the writing and the obstinate, far too chatty characters take me.

Announcing my NaNoWriMo project

NaNo-2018-Writer-Twitter-Header.png

Hello everyone, long time no see…

My arm, which I hurt several weeks ago when I fell, is almost completely OK again and I can write with both hands. I’ve been working on and off on a science fiction story that never quite went where I wanted it to go. I took it to NaNoWriMo in 2015 and found it was total crap. Then it rested for two years, ready to be dumped. Last April I took it to the Camp NaNoWriMo and still found it crap although not all of it. I was ready to give up. Then I realized something which gave me a new way to look at it, and a new direction where the plot can go. It is difficult but I want to try it. So I want to rewrite the whole thing. During October I outlined and sorted information and now I’m ready to give the story one last chance. Here it is:

Immer’s Memoirs

A new, unexpected faction appears on a planet that has been shattered by catastrophe and war and where different groups of humans try to survive with dignity and respect for each other while battling an enemy that tries to control the world. Will the new faction tip the scales and help create a free society, or will it side with the self-proclaimed benevolent dictator who claims that only a united world under a strong leadership can thrive?

I’m getting excited and a bit scared. I’m not sure if I can pull it off. But… Nano usually gives me such a push for writing a lot that I’m quite hopeful that I produce something a bit less crappy than last time.

Anyone else from around here doing the Nano?

There’s some great information in there. Check it out. I’m still undecided if I should do the NaNoWriMo this year. I’m having a massive attack of ‘why do I write at all?’ self-doubts. I know it’ll pass, but when? If you consider to go for it, that site will be helpful.

About Writing and a Giveaway

If one of you would like to have a Scrivener discount, please comment on this post from today through Friday. If there are more than one entries, I’ll give them numbers, and let a random number generator make the draw.

What is this about? Last November, I participated in NaNoWriMo and dutifully hacked 50+K words into my computer. I learned a lot: my plot sucks, my characters are ok, world building is difficult, and where was my plot supposed to go again? Anyway, as odd as it sounds, I’m still not discouraged and keep editing, and editing, and changing pov, and replotting, and…

One of the perks of NaNoWriMo are discounts, free memberships, and other gimmicks from their sponsors. One of these sponsors is Literature and Latte, a company that sells the program Scrivener. Continue reading “About Writing and a Giveaway”
