Gencom’s executive team brings an average of over 25 years of industry experience and, coupled with senior leadership, an average of over 10 years’ experience with the firm.
Founder & Principal
Karim Alibhai
Karim Alibhai is founder and Principal of Gencom, a U.S.-based owner, operator, and developer of prized luxury hospitality and residential real estate globally, which he established in 1987. With more than three decades of experience in the global hospitality industry, Mr. Alibhai oversees all investment activities for the firm including acquisitions, ground-up development, repositioning, capital markets activity and strategic exits.
Born in Kenya, Mr. Alibhai began his career operating a two-star Best Western hotel and has since he built a global portfolio that includes many of the world’s most prestigious hospitality brands, including Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis, Rosewood, InterContinental, Auberge, Fairmont, Hyatt and Marriott. Under his leadership, Gencom has developed and acquired some of the industry’s most iconic mixed-use hospitality destinations across major urban and resort markets worldwide.
Today, Gencom’s portfolio totals nearly $8 billion in assets under management and includes 24 owned assets in operation or under development with over 6,000 hotel rooms around the world, with a strategic focus on large-scale, luxury mixed-use hospitality destinations. The firm’s disciplined yet flexible investment approach allows it to navigate all phases of the capital cycle and execute complex, high-impact transactions.
Recent milestones include major acquisitions and redevelopments in key markets such as Miami, New York, Chicago, New Orleans, Bermuda, Costa Rica and Chicago, as well as securing approximately $1 billion in financing to support Gencom’s continued expansion. Notable projects include the redevelopment of the Miami Riverbridge site in Downtown Miami, major renovations at the Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, luxury hospitality developments at Costa Rica’s Peninsula Papagayo and the recapitalization and repositioning of landmark resort assets in Bermuda.
Through its investment in Pyramid Global Hospitality, Gencom is also an active owner in leading third-party hotel management platform overseeing approximately 185 properties and 50,000 keys across the Unites States and Europe. In addition, through its affiliate Convene, Gencom has ownership interests in more than 2 million square feet of premium meeting, event and flexible office space.
Mr. Alibhai holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Rice University and has served on the boards of Wyndham International, Interstate Hotels, and Benchmark Hospitality. He lives in Coral Gables with his wife and four children.
