Jubilee celebrations! I headed out to Tower Bridge, stood amidst the crowd, and watched the whole pageant float past. Very proud of being British, today.

EDIT: Possibly one of the most British things I've seen - utterly drench, completely windswept, and with the London Philharmonic Orchestra playing below them, singers from the Royal College of Music Chamber Choir standing atop the last boat, belting out Land of Hope and Glory, and Rule, Britannia before topping it off with God Save the Queen. Fabulous. Absolutely fabulous.

EDIT 2: Ha! The Queen carries her own brolly. Brilliant!

I'm in a wonderful mood - well, I would be, but it's all a bit muted now, for being tired. But I woke up early (8 is HORRIFICALLY early for a Sunday!) but the sun was blazing in my windows, and it was just gorgeous outside. Too bad at lunchtime, it decided to rain down like mad :(

So, today was Flat Cleaning Day. Except, it wasn't >.<  I ended up spending most of my time helping iBrother and iBrother's flatmate move out. Turns out, they hired the van yesterday to move. They managed to get round and pick up the furniture, the other housemates, and the other housemates' stuff. And by the time all that was dealt with, and moved, the van had to go back, and they hadn't moved their own stuff. So I ended up loading up the car, driving it down to Brixton, unloading everything, and then back to the flat, to repeat. We ended up cramming SO MUCH stuff into the car (I was driving the parentals CRV, thankfully, else it would have been twice as many trips, to do it in my car.) Though we did manage to get a double mattress, the huge-ass mirror, and various smaller bags, for one trip.

So EVENTUALLY they were gone, and I was able to start cleaning. S dropped by, and gave me a hand, so the two of us cleaned, to classical music :D I managed to get the kitchen mostly in order - the fridge was cleaned inside, all the counters scrubbed down, things re-arranged (not many things, because there are no plates yet...) but I got the placement of the kettle decided (very important, I'll have you know! Not to mention, the correct place to store the paper towels, and cling film..... And then S helped shift the "living room" furniture around, and drag Big Yucca back in (Big Yucca's the 8ft yucca plant iBrother acquired on FreeCycle, and didn't take with him). It's awesome - it kinda feels that much more, like *my* place. And also like a grown up place :D However, will have to go back up next weekend, and BLEACH THE HELL out of the bathrooms :-/ And then do the bedrooms. They'll be last.

But I am in a thoroughly pleased mood now :D Well, ok, that, and looking for more furniture on eBay. That's always pleasant :D

Remember, remember, the 5th of November,
Gunpowder, treason and plot!

(And also for me, therefore, my undergrad thesis. Popish plots abounding!)

I seem to have managed to stitch the fabric to the sewing machine itself. I didn't think that was possible. I only wanted to hem my jeans - but I think the sewing machine is defeating me.

Edit: Success! Well, once I'd stopped trying to use the right kind of foot, and stitch-type, for hemming, and decided just to sew a regular straight line.  But it achieved what was necessary - having trimmed 4 INCHES off the bottom of my jeans, and re-hemmed them, they are now a reasonable length.  Next up, moving a button.

Right. Am sitting square in the centre of my bed. Computer and tea within reach.

Small mountain of sewing that has been stalking me for ... well over a year, on hand. Needle and thread at the ready. It's time to get on with all the mending I meant to, and then never got round to dealing with.  I just hope it doesn't backfire, in the way that I discover by going to sleep, and rolling onto a stray pin.

I also need to learn how to replace a zip. I hope it's easy.

So today, in the pouring rain, my dad taught me how to shovel, mix and pour concrete, in order to lay the foundations for our new garden shed.

It's an all-round education.

(Also, back-breaking work did *not* go out with the Victorian era. Shovelling rubble? With a spade that was around during WWII? Go, my arm muscles.)

[info]somehowunbroken posted about the ruling yesterday, regarding DADT, and encouraged a thread about how SGA characters might respond to it. It was supposed to be a line or two, or a drabble comment. Instead, I managed to come up with 2000 words. That's the longest I've ever written. I'm shocked, at myself.  And then, between the wonderful works of [info]bergann and [personal profile] swingandswirlI ended up with Colby, and Evan's reaction. Which amounts to an inter-galactic booty-call, without the booty (it remains decidedly off-screen), with a side helping of David running commentary on the DADT policy.  Maybe having a busted foot has some use after all.

So. This ends up being for the afore-mentioned three marvellous writers.  Not beta'd, and so very far out of my usual comfort zone (drabbles! 100 word drabbles.) Warnings, I guess for hand-holding, and an slight British incredulousness towards a political policy.

I ficc'd, for a Numb3rs/Stargate: Atlantis cross at 2000 words. *blink*Collapse )

Teleological: (doctrine the universe/all phenomena/natural processes are being directed towards a goal/designed according to some purpose)

Rodney/Sheppard

Sheppard knew about bonding, about re-evaluating your people and your relationships when you spent the majority of your time trusting them to save your life, and they yours. It was almost expected in the military, though he couldn’t contemplate anyone having planned this. This, he thought, as he tipped back towards Rodney’s mouth and the press of Rodney’s hands against his skin, this was like his whole life had been moving in one direction only, had been designed for one purpose, and in the midst of clutching Rodney tightly, he wondered if that purpose was supposed to feel like home.

Still trying to learn stuff for exams, still having to look words up in the dictionary because all of a sudden, i'm questioning everything.

Still also all the fault of [personal profile] kate and actually, maybe also a little the fault of [personal profile] bluflamingo because her Lorne characterisations? (All her characterisations, but Lorne most especially) are a thousand and one kinds of amazing.

Anyway.

Epistemic Community: (not actually a drabble, yet)
a faction/mindset/trans-national networks of knowledge-based experts who define problems and posit solutions

Atlantis’ scientific community; the daily debates involved in keeping Atlantis liveable for humans.

Contingency:
something liable, but uncertain to occur, dependent on chance of future occurring
.

Contingency: something liable, but uncertain to occur, dependent on chance of future occurring. Behind the cut for the smallest hint of Lorne-threesome-slash.Collapse )

Hubris:
arrogance or over-confidence; likely to result in disaster/ruin

Rodney was often initially dismissed as suffering from extreme hubris, and to those who saw him come running through the gate as the team fired backwards into the diplomatic-disaster of yet another local planet, felt that sooner rather than later they would be proved right.  Unfortunately for their arguments, Rodney’s arrogance never actually progressed to outright hubris – he was as intelligent as he claimed, and more often than not, his thoughts, words and experiments were those that saved the day. Just, not the feelings of the less-than-genius level people that were forced to work within hearing range of his diatribes.

Drabbles in the theme of Stargate: Atlantis, with the eye to memorising a bunch of concepts and definitions. All the fault of [personal profile] kate  who started it off here.

Inexorable:

Unrelenting; being incapable of changing your positionCollapse )

Information Arbitrage: (risk-free profit)

And ok. This was supposed to be the text of the cut:

Arbitrage: The practice of taking advantage of a price-difference between 2 or more markets (Atlantis' personnel’s individual valuations of chocolate), through combinations of matching deals (John "sells" his time for chocolate) that capitalises on the imbalance in value, with profit being the difference of the market prices (John gets chocolate for ways that he likes spending his time, whilst selling the cookies to get out of doing things he doesn’t want to do).

Which would then be followed by the text itself. But Dreamwidth is not having the above as the text of the cut. So instead, please follow the chocolate chip cookies.
