Driving Systemic Change through Evidence-Based Models

The Funda Wande programme is a series of evidence-based interventions that seek to improve foundational literacy and numeracy (FLN) in lower quintile (quintile 1-3) schools in South Africa. Grounded in Implementation research, the programme uses high-quality LTSM (Learner and Teacher Support Materials), Training (Teachers, Coaches, Teacher Assistants, Teacher Interns & Subject Advisors) and capacity building & support as a mechanism for improving learning outcomes for FLN. Our intervention sites currently include Limpopo, Eastern Cape and Western Cape.

Western Cape

Western Cape Programme

In the Western Cape, Funda Wande is focused on scaling our interventions through a sustainable, low-touch model in partnership with the Western Cape Department of Education (WCED). Our strategy empowers the WCED to implement and expand our literacy and numeracy programs, ensuring on-time LTSM distribution, teacher training, and program monitoring. This approach allows for widespread replication across the province with minimal ongoing support from Funda Wande.

Limpopo

Limpopo Programmes

Limpopo offers Funda Wande a unique opportunity to enhance foundational numeracy alongside our literacy interventions. Our focus is on improving early-grade mathematics education, addressing the critical need for stronger numeracy skills in addition to our established literacy efforts.

Eastern Cape

Eastern Cape Programmes

In the Eastern Cape, we are integrating behavioral science into teaching practices to improve foundational literacy. By targeting teacher pedagogy, especially in rural areas, we aim to reduce variation in the use of our Learning and Teaching Support Materials (LTSM) and enhance instructional time, leading to more consistent and effective teaching.
