FANDOM DISCUSSION TIME: Specifically referring to fanfiction, but I guess this can refer to any fandom-created media and the matter of feedback. I have two distinct scenarios for you that happened to me recently
(because I have been reading YOI fanfic for days now) and I need opinions on them.
SCENARIO ONE: You find a fanfic and infer from the tags that it's a rare headcanon that you adore. Like rare as in drop of water in the whole world's ocean rare. But when you read it, it's really not your style. Like it's okay, but not something you personally enjoy. Do you still leave feedback in hopes it will encourage more stories in that vein that might more your style, or do you just move on and sigh?
SCENARIO TWO: You're reading a fic that ticks off your list: 1) it's well-written, 2) by a writer you like, and 3) it's a AU setting you love. It's great, you're having a great time, want to gush...and then the ending makes you go "NOPE NOPE NOPE." Not as in a squick/warning that wasn't noted, just something that comes out of left field that you can't connect to the characters at all. Do you still leave feedback because you've enjoyed it up to a point, or...?
And yes, I know people write fics and create fanart simply out of love and fun; I'm not trying to judge anyone by their style or choices. I'm just trying to determine, as a reader, what would your response be and why?
