I wish to thank the science department of the Österreichischer Rundfunk; the federal ministry of science, education, and culture; the town of Vienna; and the Hans Jonas-gesellschaft for organizing and sponsoring this important conference. I would like to spend a few minutes talking with you about the role that social elites play in legitimating genocide. It is by now well recognized that genocide requires the active participation of many members of a society and the passive acquiescence of many more. (more…)
