The FPD Teaching Guides collection is closing in on 40! That is, 40 guides on assignment and course design, feedback and grading, how students learn, inclusive teaching, pedagogy & practice, learning activities, instructional methods, and reflective practice. Each guide features an overview of the topic, strategies you can use in your practice, and additional resources for expanding your understanding.
Are there topics you’d like to see covered in the Guides? Contact fpd@cod.edu with your ideas or to volunteer to write a guide.
Faculty Cohorts and Communities – Whether you call them communities of practice, learning cohorts, or inquiry groups, research demonstrates that small peer-led groups of faculty coming together over the course of a semester or year have a significant impact on pedagogical innovation and scholarly teaching, faculty interest and confidence in teaching, as well as student learning. See examples of cohorts at COD as well as strategies for facilitating a community of practice.
Learning Communities – Learning Communities (LCs) have demonstrated significant benefits for students, faculty, and the institution at large, both nationally and at COD. Learn everything you need to know about LCs, including how to create one of your own.
Online Teaching – Effective online teaching combines awareness of course design with strategies for supporting learners. The principles focus on the interconnections between student success and teaching. Underpinning the principles is a focus on continuous professional development to support growth, adapt to technological innovation, and develop teaching strategies that support college students.
Open Pedagogy – Open pedagogy is the practice of engaging with students as creators of information rather than simply consumers of it. It’s a form of experiential learning in which students demonstrate understanding through the act of creation. The products of open pedagogy are student-created and openly licensed so that they may live outside of the classroom in a way that has an impact on the greater community.
Trauma-Informed Pedagogy – Strategies for teaching your students despite the challenges created by trauma, anxiety, and uncertainty.
