Our Progress

Since our founding in 2017, Form Energy has rapidly advanced iron-air batteries from concept to commercialization for the electric grid by de-risking the technology through rigorous testing, scaling our manufacturing operations, and signing agreements with leading utilities to deploy multi-day energy storage systems across the country. From early prototypes in the lab to the world’s first grid-connected systems, this timeline highlights the milestones that have powered our progress so far and build the foundation for what comes next.

  • Founded by five energy storage veterans
  • Began research & development work on low-cost, multi-day energy storage systems with initial seed funding and lab space from MIT’s The Engine
  • 2018
Form Energy’s first iron-air battery prototype
  • Established Form’s first research & development facility in Somerville, MA
  • Built first battery prototypes
  • Assembled and tested first subscale cell
  • Selected 100-hour, iron-air battery as first product following extensive techno-economic analysis of market needs and scientific evaluation of optimal technologies
  • Closed $9 million Series A financing round led by Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Prelude Ventures, and The Engine
  • 2019
A Form Energy subscale cell
  • Built first iron-air battery electrodes
  • Increased testing to more than 35 subscale cells total
  • Validated capability of iron-air chemistry to meet essential performance and duration metrics for multi-day energy storage
  • Closed $40 million Series B financing round led by Eni Next, bringing Form’s total funding to over $50 million
  • 2020
Form Energy's first full-height cell
  • Integrated world-leading air cathodes into product design by acquiring NantEnergy, a zinc-air battery company, and demonstrated air cathode technology’s unmatched performance potential in first full-height cell
  • Assembled and tested first full-scale cell and expanded testing to close to 200 subscale cells total
  • Launched Formware™, an advanced software tool for utilities and grid operators to model the value of multi-day energy storage in their portfolios
  • Opened engineering facility in Berkeley, CA to support product development
  • Signed agreement for first pilot project with a commercial customer – a 1.5 MW project in partnership with Great River Energy, one of the largest electricity providers in Minnesota
  • Closed $76 million Series C financing round led by Coatue Management
  • 2021
Form Energy's first full-scale cell stack
  • Built first full-scale cell stack, demonstrating performance transfer from subscale to full-scale
  • Built, tested, and verified product performance on first iron-air battery module, and expanded testing to 2,450+ subscale cells and 17 full-scale cells total
  • Added pilot manufacturing facility in Eighty-Four, PA to begin developing advanced manufacturing processes
  • Launched nation-wide site selection process for first high-volume battery manufacturing facility
  • Closed $240 million Series D financing round led by ArcelorMittal’s XCarb™ innovation fund
  • 2022
Form Energy iron-air battery modules on test in Berkeley, CA
  • Developed advanced manufacturing processes for electrodes, cells, and modules
  • Increased testing and verification with 7,700+ subscale cells, 52 full-scale cells, and two modules tested in total
  • Signed agreement on a 15 MW project with Georgia Power, the largest utility in Georgia
  • After reviewing 500+ potential sites across the United States, announced plans to open Form’s first high-volume manufacturing facility in Weirton, West Virginia
  • Closed $450 million Series E financing round led by TPG’s global impact investing platform, TPG Rise
  • 2023
Form Energy’s first grid-connected iron-air battery system in the Sacramento Valley
  • Began construction on Form Factory 1, Form’s first high-volume manufacturing facility in Weirton, WV
  • Honed and ramped pilot manufacturing processes across the full battery system
  • Deployed world’s first grid-connected iron-air battery system for testing in the field in the Sacramento Valley region of California and continued to ramp testing and verification in total to 13,500+ subscale cells, 250+ full-scale cells, and 18 modules
  • Signed over 4 gigawatt hours of commercial contracts with leading utilities and energy entities, including Xcel Energy, Dominion Energy, the California Energy Commission, and NYSERDA
  • 2024
Form Factory 1 in Weirton, WV (July 2024)
  • Completed construction of Form Factory 1, a state-of-the-art, 550,000+ square foot manufacturing facility
  • Began trial production of Form’s iron-air batteries at Form Factory 1
  • Deployed Form’s second grid-connected iron-air battery system for testing in the California Bay Area and expanded testing and verification to 21,500+ subscale cells, 650+ full-scale cells, and 113 modules total
  • Selected by the U.S. Department of Energy to deploy the largest energy storage project by energy capacity announced yet in the world – an 85 MW/8,500 MWh project in Maine
  • Successfully completed UL9540A safety testing on Form’s iron-air battery system, demonstrating the highest battery safety standards with no flame or thermal runaway event propagation
  • Closed $405 million Series F financing round led by T. Rowe Price, bringing total funds raised to over $1.2 billion
  • 2025
Form Energy iron-air battery systems leaving Form Factory 1 for deployment at first pilot site for commercial demonstration
  • Added multiple enclosures to Form’s grid-connected iron-air battery system in the Bay Area and continued to increase testing and verification to 28,000+ subscale cells, 950+ full-scale cells, 156 modules, and 7 fielded enclosures in total
  • Manufactured and shipped first iron-air battery systems to pilot site for commercial demonstration in MN in partnership with Great River Energy, with the full project planned to come online in 2026
