Obama Sends Letter to Congress Saying the US Was Part of the Failed French Rescue Attempt in Somalia
That’s nice of him to do so, after the fact.
Somalia is one of Obama’s favorite target practice sites for drone attacks.
France says the US is assisting them also in Mali, to fight the “rebels” so that Europe remain protected. Whatever.
France says the French hostage, who had been held since 2009, was killed by the terrorists. The terrorists say he is alive. . . . (more)

U.S. Military Purchasing Combat Equipment for Domestic Contingency Planning + US Drone Activity Update

21 07 2012

For the last two years, the President’s Budget Submissions for the Department of Defense have included purchases of a significant amount of combat equipment, including armored vehicles, helicopters and even artillery, under an obscure section of the FY2008 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for the purposes of “homeland defense missions, domestic emergency responses, and providing military support to civil authorities.” Items purchased under the section include combat vehicles, tanks, helicopters, artillery, mortar systems, missiles, small arms and communications equipment. Justifications for the budget items indicate that many of the purchases are part of routine resupply and maintenance, yet in each case the procurement is cited as being “necessary for use by the active and reserve components of the Armed Forces for homeland defense missions, domestic emergency responses, and providing military support to civil authorities” under section 1815 of the FY2008 NDAA.

Section 1815 of the FY2008 NDAA requires that every five years the Secretary of Defense work with the Secretary of Homeland Security to determine “military-unique capabilities needed to be provided by the Department of Defense to support civil authorities in an incident of national significance or a catastrophic  . . . blah, blah, blah . . . .

US Announces Plans To Arm Domestic Surveillance Drones With Missiles, Drone UPDATES

31 05 2012

From Alexander Higgins

The US announces plans to arm drones that will be operating inside the US with missiles and bombs as part of a 30,000 strong domestic deployment.

Fully armed remotely controlled aircraft used by the United States military and its allies in the War on Terror overseas are set to begin a new era of operating over domestic soil.

The US military has revealed that stronger and more powerful versions of the famed Predator drones, known as MQ-9 Reaper drones, are being fitted with missiles and other explosive ordinances as part of a deployment of 30,000 drones authorized to fly over the US by the NDAA and the armed drones will now be operating inside the United States.

A military spokesman at the Hancock Field Air National Guard base in NY said the drones will only be armed with missiles and explosive ordinances when they are operating in airspace over US military bases and are only being armed as part of a program to train others to operate America’s new drone fleet.

Legislation passed by congress authorized the integration [ um-hummmm]  of military and public airspace into a single national aerospace grid to support both civil and public drone flights over U.S. skies. . .  (more)
