5.8 trillion becquerels of strontium leaked from Fukushima over weekend [!!!] + UPDATES

5 12 2011

Tepco Press Release, Dec. 5: “At 11:33 am on December 4, workers found that there was puddle water inside the barrier around the evaporative condensation apparatus (estimated volume of water was approx. 45 m3 [1 cubic meter of water = 1 metric ton]).”

NHK: “The water is believed to have contained 130,000 becquerels per cubic centimeter of radioactive strontium.”

Fukushima – Strontium Found In Marine Soil 258 Times Normal Level

27 06 2011

from Lucas Whitefield Hixson

Strontium-89 and strontium-90 have been detected in soil and ocean water, but for the first time they have been detected in ocean soil 3 kilometers off the coast where Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant is located. The samples from 2 locations were taken on June 2.

Strontium-89 (half-life 51 days) was detected at 140 becquerels/kg at one location (off Minami-Soma City), 42 becquerels/kg at the other (off Naraha-machi). Strontium-90 (half-life 29 year) was detected at 44 becquerels/kg at one location, 10 becquerels/kg at the other. There is no safety standard set for radioactive strontium. The amount detected in regular sampling surveys from 1999 to 2008 at Fukushima II (not I) was ND (not detected) to 0.17 becquerel/kg. . .  (more)

UPDATE – Our post on ALERT at US Nebraska nuke plant.

Google continues censoring all articles on this global emergency and these meltdowns. Today there are 1,785 articles on the super toxic strontium found outside the exclusion zone and Google News will NOT put it in “Top Stories”.  Of course runaway radiation and radiated water dumping don’t make it to “Top Stories” either. You have to get any news on the topic by doing a specific search on Google News[sic] . – F.C.

Nuclear meltdown at Fukushima plant
One of the reactors at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi power plant did suffer a nuclear meltdown, Japanese officials admitted for the first time yesterday, describing a pool of molten fuel at the bottom of the reactor’s containment vessel.

Tepco: Leak Suggests (!!!)  Severe Damage

TOKYO—The amount of water leaking from one of the reactors at the earthquake-hit Fukushima Daiichi nuclear complex is much greater than previously thought, plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Thursday, a finding that points to severe damage to the reactor and could force a change in plans for stabilizing the unit. . .

Fuel Rods Fully Exposed at Dai-Ichi TEPCO Nuclear Plant’s Number One Reactor

Now the fuel rods fully exposed at one of the nuclear reactors at the Dai-Ichi facility are creating new worry. The long-term effects of the problems at the nuclear plant may take decades to fully document.

The number one reactor at the Dai-Ichi TEPCO facility now has fully exposed fuel rods. Junichi Matsumoto (AKA: lying sack of sh*t) , manager of the TEPCO plant, announced that “The water level in the number one reactor is now 3.3 feet below the base of the fuel assembly,”  . . .

The print media today has a slew of headlines with misleading phrases like “setback” to imply there was somehow some progress ever being made at the blown out, blown up, on fire, China Syndroming wasteland of a nuclear plant.

Pathetic.

Fukushima deadly radioactive

Fukushima: Radiation level off the scale

http://english.ruvr.ru/photoalbum/48827751/48831506/

The radiation emanating from the Fukushima nuclear plant is estimated at tens of thousands of terabequerel (TBq) per hour. The maximum level is equivalent to a release into the atmosphere of radioactive materials equivalent to more than several tens of thousands of TBq of Iodine-131

Chain Reactions Reignited At Fukushima After Tsunami, Says New Study

Radioactive byproducts indicate that nuclear chain reactions must have been burning at the damaged nuclear reactors long after the disaster unfolded.

Tense situation around Japanese NPPs

The situation around Japanese nuclear power plants affected by the earthquake remains tense. The Fukushima-1 NPP has been assigned level 6 danger on the international nuclear event scale. The final 7th level was only designated once, in 1986, after the Chernobyl catastrophe

Radioactive strontium detected at Fukushima plant

Tokyo Electric Power Company has detected high levels of radioactive strontium in soil inside the compound of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

Strontium can cause cancer and like calcium it tends to collect in bones once humans inhale it.

Up to 570 becquerels of strontium 90 per kilogram of dry soil were detected in samples from 3 locations. They were taken on April 18, about 500 meters from the Number 1 and 2 reactors at soil depths of up to 5 centimeters. The amount detected is about 130 times higher than a previous high, level that was measured in Fukushima Prefecture before the accident at the nuclear plant.

TEPCO also said it found 4,400 becquerels of radioactive strontium 89 per kilogram of dry soil taken from the same location. . .

Japan detects radiation up to 700 milliserverts at Fukushima nuke plant

TOKYO, May 9 (Xinhua) — Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) on Monday detected radiation levels in the building housing the faltering No. 1 reactor that far exceeded expected levels reaching as high as 700 millisieverts per hour, the utility firm said. . . .  (more)
