Fukushima – Radiation high at No.3 reactor pool, + More on that FIRE

NHK has this update –
Tokyo Electric Power Company examined a water sample from the pool on Sunday. The sample contained 140,000 becquerels of radioactive cesium-134 per cubic centimeter, 150,000 becquerels of cesium-137, and 11,000 becquerels of iodine-131.

None of these substances were detected during an inspection on March 2nd, before the accident triggered by the March 11th disaster.

TEPCO says these substances may have come from damaged fuel rods in the reactor rather than the damaged spent fuel rods in the pool,

Spokesman poo-poos all that black smoke. Calls it a “shadow” (!!!)

Fukushima Prefecture, Japan — Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency (NISA), and the Japanese government gave a joint press conference on Sunday and explained that an unusual amount of smoke that billowed from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power reactor on Saturday night was nothing to be concerned about.

“Steam is coming out from the spent fuel pool of the No. 3 and No. 4 reactors, and I’m assuming that due to shadows created by lighting (!!!), the steam appeared black. Therefore, we assessed that it’s not smoke from something burning or that sort of thing,” TEPCO’s General Manager, Junichi Matsumoto reassured reporters at the press conference. . . . (more)
