Marine Scientists Begin Cruise off Fukushima

2 06 2011

From Salon –

Three months after the tsunami-stricken Fukushima Daiichi plant began leaking unprecedented amounts of radioactive isotopes, an interdisciplinary group of scientists will begin measuring the radioactivity in the ocean east of Japan on 4 June. Led by Ken Buessler of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), the cruise will carry 17 researchers from several countries on a 15-day expedition.  . . .

Levels of Radioactive Materials Rise Near Japanese Plant

16 04 2011

The New York Times says:

Levels of radioactive materials have risen sharply again in seawater near the troubled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in northern Japan, raising the possibility of new leaks at the complex, the government said Saturday.

. . . . . But the government said Saturday that levels of radioactive materials in the seawater have risen again in recent days. The level of radioactive iodine 131 jumped to 6,500 times the legal limit, according to samples taken Friday, up from 1,100 times the limit in samples taken the day before. Levels of cesium 134 and cesium 137 rose nearly fourfold. The increased levels are still far below those recorded earlier this month before the initial leak was plugged. . . .

Japan’s ocean radiation hits 7.5 million times legal limit[!!!]

On RADIATION TRAVELING VIA THE JET STREAM

There are tons of articles relating radiation readings in western US & Canada all the way across the mid-US and Canada to New England.  You can find them with Google News search term “radiation in jet stream“.

But don’t worry! Radiation in the rain and soil and sea is totally HARMLESS.

Global Research sets the record straight –

The government says there is no danger, as these levels (even levels in rainwater above drinking water standards) are “safe”. Specifically, they explain that the exposure is only short-term, while federal drinking water standards assume a constant level of radiation over the course of a year. . . .

Physicians for Social Responsibility notes:

According to the National Academy of Sciences, there are no safe doses of radiation. Decades of research show clearly that any dose of radiation increases an individual’s risk for the development of cancer.

“There is no safe level of radionuclide exposure, whether from food, water or other sources. Period,” said Jeff Patterson, DO, immediate past president of Physicians for Social Responsibility. “Exposure to radionuclides, such as iodine-131 and cesium-137, increases the incidence of cancer. For this reason, every effort must be taken to minimize the radionuclide content in food and water.”
Consuming food containing radionuclides is particularly dangerous. If an individual ingests or inhales a radioactive particle, it continues to irradiate the body as long as it remains radioactive and stays in the body,”said Alan H. Lockwood, MD, a member of the Board of Physicians for Social Responsibility. . . (more)

This Monday we notice the news media is goofing around again.

  • They are using the word “Meltdown” and hundreds of news headlines that are trivia, unrelated to the Japan-global catastrophe. This is obviously intended to defuse the story.
  • They are  dropping the story or moving it to the back burner.
  • They are spamming the leads with industry puff pieces promoting nuke power.
  • They repeat the corporate fiction that environmentalists back nuclear power. They ban discussion of carbon emmission pollution until now.
  • They aren’t fooling anyone.

You can see it  on YouTube here – Aerials of Fukushima reveal smoke from damaged reactors

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFi3Jt8LE5A

NHK says:  Japan’s Defense Ministry has released a new aerial video of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, which shows the damage to the reactors more clearly than previous footage.

The 4-minute edited video released on Sunday is the second aerial footage of the plant to be shown to the public since it was damaged by the March 11th earthquake and tsunami.

Taken from a Ground Self-Defense Force helicopter earlier in the day, the video shows the ceiling of the Number One reactor building that collapsed in a hydrogen blast.

White vapor, possibly steam, is rising through several holes in the roof of the building for the Number 2 reactor.

The roof of the Number 3 reactor building was also blown off by a hydrogen explosion and steam is rising from inside.

The walls of the Number 4 reactor building have collapsed, exposing what appear to be a crane and a ball-shaped yellow structure. Steam is gushing out from the building.

The Self-Defense Forces say they will continue taking aerial videos to check the situation at the plant.

Japan Nuke Plant Spins Out of Control

26 03 2011

The staff have been evacuated again because the radiation spiked in the plant. The NY  Post says:

“A possible breach in a reactor at Japan’s quake-crippled nuclear plant yesterday triggered an emergency evacuation of the facility, prompting fears of far worse radiation leaks than previously believed and causing a dire setback for workers scrambling to avert a full-scale global catastrophe.”

And the US military is getting large amounts of fresh water to flush the seawater from the cooling system. But that was halted when the staff fled. AOL news says:

IAEA experts said the ocean will quickly dilute the worst contamination. Radioactive iodine breaks down within weeks but cesium could foul the marine environment for decades.

Nuclear safety officials suspect a breach in one or more of the plant’s units, possibly a crack or hole in the stainless steel chamber around a reactor core containing fuel rods or the concrete wall surrounding a pool where spent fuel rods are stored.

Physicist Michio Kaku says:

“This is huge. For the first time, they’re using that dreaded word, ‘breach,’ Kaku said during an interview at KATU’s studios. “Plutonium is the most toxic chemical known to science. A speck of plutonium, a millionth of a gram, could cause cancer.”

Meanwhile, in the USA –

The nuclear crisis in Japan has laid bare an ever-growing problem for the United States — the enormous amounts of still-hot radioactive waste accumulating at commercial nuclear reactors in more than 30 states.

The U.S. has 71,862 tons of the waste, according to state-by-state numbers obtained by The Associated Press. But the nation has no place to permanently store the material, which stays dangerous for tens of thousands of years.

Some truthful science from Sascha Vongehr:

Fukushima Nuclear Reactor Truth: Locally Chernobyl

For decades we have been told that with the lessons learned from the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, nuclear energy is safe. As the still unfolding mayhem at the Dai-Ichi plant in Fukushima, Japan, proves, nothing could be further from the truth. The fuel rods in at least three reactors are partly molten. All six reactors are in trouble, although most were not on-line during the earthquake! In spite of all downplaying by officials, the nuclear industry, and science apologists, a complete meltdown of some reactors and a nuclear chain reaction of molten fuel are still possible. A few science bloggers keep up honest reporting about the current state. . .
